The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a highly specialized synovial joint that connects the mandible (lower jaw) to the temporal bone of the skull, playing a vital role in everyday functions such as chewing, speaking, swallowing, and facial expressions. What makes the TMJ unique is its dual mechanism—it acts as both a hinge (for opening and closing the mouth) and a gliding joint (for forward, backward, and side-to-side movements).

At the core of this joint lies the articular disc, a fibrocartilaginous structure that divides the joint into upper and lower compartments, ensuring smooth, frictionless motion and effective load distribution during jaw movements. The joint is stabilized by ligaments and coordinated by the muscles of mastication, allowing precise and powerful jaw function.

Because of its constant use and complex biomechanics, the TMJ is prone to dysfunction.
