There is a significant gap in TMJ surgical expertise in the Western Cape — and it's one I've dedicated my career to filling.

I'm Dr Philip Jonsson, a fellowship-trained maxillofacial and oral surgeon in full-time private practice at Mediclinic Vergelegen in Somerset West, with consulting rooms in Hermanus.

After completing a dedicated fellowship in TMJ and reconstructive surgery at the University of Udine in Italy, I returned to the Western Cape to offer a level of subspecialty TMJ care that wasn't widely available here before.

I also currently lead the teaching of TMJ and TMJ-associated reconstructive surgery at the University of the Western Cape, at Tygerberg and Groote Schuur Hospitals.

The TMJ has three main components: the mandibular condyle, the temporal bone, and the articular disc.
