The honest answer is that it depends from case to case. There is no need to remove a metal (amalgam) filling that is still doing its job. A sound filling that is not cracked, not leaking, and has no decay developing underneath is best left in place.

Here is why we proceed with caution. Removing a metal filling also means removing more of your natural tooth structure, and that carries a real risk of the tooth cracking, which can ultimately lead to tooth loss. So the question is never simply metal versus composite. It is whether replacing the filling will leave the tooth in a better, healthier position than it was before.
