Dentistry and Patients

I received an interesting perspective from a friend, reflecting on my work as dentist.

For years, dentistry has been labeled as the most stressful profession due to ā€˜manufactured’ conditions.

For me, there is mostly joy with patients. Each patient brings combinations of pain, fear, life stories and desperation with them and I have to use this privileged look into this patient’s life and soul, to not only treat the physical problem, but also the person. The patient’s soul. The fears they have and I love to share, give advice and take advice.

A patient allows me into his/her life with stories, and my warped sense of humor gives us a far more colorful and fulfilling experience in dentistry, than just fixing a dental problem.

It is so interesting to, by now, know what a patient’s personality traits are by the time we find a few words about life. The dental thing is usually easy. The soul thing is more complex and it is this part of a patient that colors my, and hopefully the patient’s life.

The relationship between myself and a patient, is unique and special. With every patient I am positive that I know their borders and this makes my work amazing and relatively stress free.

So, I have the benefit of looking into a patient’s life and realize that there is trust that I have to fulfill.

Let’s face the facts. There are many things humans do, say, accept, and repeat that I do not always understand, and often do not agree with.

Even in dentistry, materials were used for many years and were once seen as perfectly acceptable. Today, some of those same materials are frowned upon. The concern I have is that some modern materials may one day be viewed in exactly the same way — but for now, we accept them without much questioning.

But let’s forget dentistry for a moment.

What is it about the human race that makes so many of us think in such different ways? Have we not evolved enough, or developed enough reasoning ability, to understand that starting a war is a truly destructive thing? Yet we still do it.

Is it not strange that we keep manufacturing new objects simply to replace things that already work? Do we really need the newest version of everything? Can we really live on Mars? And even if we could, would it not be far better to take care of this amazing, fascinating, loveable planet we already have?

Imagine less money being spent on war and more being invested in education. Not only academic education, but real life education. Education that teaches people how to think, reason, respect, understand, and live as individuals. Education that helps people realise that we are not all meant to fit into the same box.

Because we cannot fit into exact boxes. Yet, oh boy, are we manipulated to try.

If you do not fit in, you are called different. And I must say, I am proud to be different.

Why fall for every new trend, every new pair of dark glasses, every new version of what society says is beautiful or successful? Why not simply be yourself? Why try to be perfect in the eyes of society, according to standards that were never truly yours to begin with?

What is wrong with sexy wrinkles and shiny grey hair? That is character. That is life. That is beauty with a story.

Why chase the newest SUV with all its modern features, when you can drive a beautiful 911 SC with class, soul, and timeless elegance?

Is it too late to teach the new generation the spiritual value of good music? The depth in Pink Floyd’s words? The growth in self-respect that comes when you truly respect others?

Perhaps this way of thinking is an individual trait. And if it is, I am proud to have it.

Do I give up on the human race?

Not yet.

Because I love people.

Every day, I see people as human beings. Different, yes. But also similar in so many ways. I just hope that, one day, more of us can start living our individual lives with more honesty, more thought, more respect, and more acceptance of the fact that we are all different — and beautifully human.

Difficulty to open mouth

This is a real nightmare that can come from various sources.

1. You just are like that, and have always been like that. No traumatic incident, no operation. It is the way you are. This is very complex and difficult to treat. A x-ray of the joints of your jaw can help to identify if there is a mechanical (cartlidge) obstruction. There are some exercises that can be performed, but the cause of this needs to be identified.

2. Infection around impacted wisdom teeth. The restriction of opening will be a gradual onset. An x-ray can confirm this and sadly, removal of wizzies can’t solve the problem. Luckily, this TM joint problem can be treated.

3. Dislocation of one of the TM joint disks. This usually presents with clicking on opening or on closing the jaw. (with translation or reduction) This one is a real little bu**er. Treatment is complex and extreme cases can be operated on by a specific surgeon.

4. The secret is, to treat your TM joints with respect.

Do not get hit on the joint with a fist.
No not over stretch your mouth without reason.
Do not try to fit a tennis ball in your mouth. Respect it!

Sometimes I sits.

Sometimes I finks

Sometimes I sits and I finks (spelling mistakes intended)

These words we, as students, said in respect of the statue of a man, that appears to sit and think. ( The Thinkerā€ or ā€œLe Penseur). Sometimes I have these thoughts of life. The meaning of this all, and NO, I do not have a religious empty space that needs to be filled. I just think.

Are all the important facts about how to manage your health, that we are being fed by research and media, really that important. Do we really need to take all the supplements, keep track of out steps each day, work ourselves to death, watch our electronic wrist attached watches all day, just to be healthy, as heath is defined by media and internet research.

I am not insinuating that you must continue smoking and be a couch slouch and not take care of your mind and body. I am asking (thinking), can we not just live life with normal food and hard old school exercise, and still be healthy. Is it important to have that one little slightly skew tooth corrected with braces, and you must have toxins and strange fillers injected for little wrinkles and have to consume absurd amounts of tinned supplements, just to be healthy. (By the way, little wrinkles show wisdom, status and is sexy.). Will your life terminate into total chaos?

What if we just accept a bit of what life give us. Take care of what we were dealt, but do it well. Laugh a bit more and let that steroid pumped guy in his 4x4 cut in. Let him go, because he will NEVER reach a point where he will realize that that single one second he stole from you, has no benefit for him. What if, preserving your spiritual wellbeing, our fun in life, eat just enough (hara Hachi bu), turn away from anger a bit more, exercise with fun is more a benefit to our longevity than all the crap we are blasted with.

Imagine (ala John Lenon), imagine if we all are just nice.
