Conditions such as Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) can restrict blood flow to the legs and feet, while diabetes may affect both circulation and nerve function. This can make wounds harder to detect and slower to heal, increasing the risk of serious complications.

Early detection and good long-term health management can make an important difference. Regular check-ups, staying active, maintaining a balanced diet, avoiding smoking and managing conditions such as diabetes can all help reduce your risk.

If you experience persistent leg pain, changes in skin colour or temperature, numbness, or a wound that is not healing, speak to a healthcare professional.

The first year after amputation happens in stages, not a straight line.

Healing, rehabilitation, prosthetic fitting and confidence all develop at different speeds.

Measure progress by function, report discomfort early and review goals as strength and routines change.

Some weeks bring visible progress. Others are about protecting what has already been gained.

Your first prosthetic appointment should begin with questions.

Tell your prosthetist how you move, where you live, what work you do and which activities matter most.

Bring notes on mobility challenges, pain, skin problems and the goals that would make daily life easier.

You do not need technical knowledge. You only need to explain the life your prosthesis must support.

A prosthetic assessment considers your health, residual limb, mobility, environment and personal goals.

Save this list for your next appointment.

Below knee prosthesis beach walking, this is the moment I won’t forget.

Two weeks after Eddie’s first prosthetic fitting, we fitted a second test socket because his residual limb had already lost volume during the first week of walking.

That shrinkage is completely normal after a recent amputation. If we don’t keep adjusting for volume loss, the socket becomes loose, pressure increases on the distal tibia, and balance and control become much weaker.

This video shows Eddie taking his first steps without crutches on a very windy beach. 🌊

I watched those steps with my heart racing. A few weeks ago he was uncertain about the future. Now he is walking independently on uneven sand, fighting the wind, and proving to himself that progress is possible.

For anyone early after a below knee amputation, watch this to the end. The first prosthesis is not the final fit, and frequent socket adjustments are often what make safe walking possible.

Residual limb volume changes are expected during the first months after a below knee amputation, and timely socket adjustments help protect the tibia and improve balance.

If you’re struggling with a loose prosthetic socket or early pressure pain, contact us and let’s assess the fit before problems develop.

Every orthotic device tells a story of resilience, recovery, and determination.

For Johan Du Randt, this custom carbon Fior & Gentz KAFO became part of his journey toward greater stability and mobility after brain surgery.

Designed with the Neuro Vario 2 Knee Joint and Neuro Swing 2 Ankle Joint, this orthosis was carefully customised to provide the support needed for safer, more confident movement.

The process requires precision, patience, and attention to detail, but seeing the final outcome makes every step worthwhile.

Helping patients regain independence is at the heart of what we do at Deist & Associated. Because improving movement can improve lives. ✨

Below-knee amputation recovery starts with uncertainty, not walking. Eddie’s first steps brought tears to both of us.

Four weeks ago, Eddie Peyper came to me not knowing what the future would look like after losing his leg below the knee. Like many new amputees, he had questions about healing, swelling, pain, walking again, and what was realistically possible.

We sat down and spoke through each step. I fitted him with an Össur post-op silicone liner to help shape and control swelling in his new residual limb during the first four weeks.

Once his limb had settled, we started manufacturing his first test prosthesis.

The moment he stood and took those first steps was something I will not forget. Eddie was motivated from the very first fitting, and watching his confidence return was emotional for both of us. 👣

We fitted him with an Össur Seal-In X5 silicone liner and an Össur ProFlex Terra foot.

Eddie, thank you for trusting me during one of the toughest periods of your life. I have no doubt that the Eddie you remember is coming back, step by step.

The Össur Seal-In X5 liner creates a secure vacuum suspension that improves fit, comfort, and control during below-knee prosthetic walking.

If you or a family member has recently had an amputation and need guidance on the first weeks after surgery, I’m happy to help.
