A- Z of Oral Health: Knocked out tooth

A tooth can be knocked out by a blow to the mouth, or an accident involving the face. This can happen for example while playing contact sports. The tooth can be replaced in the socket successfully if you take the right action as soon as possible.
Hold the tooth by the crown and put it back into the socket firmly, root first. Bite on a clean handkerchief for about 15 to 20 minutes. Visit your dentist as soon as possible.

Dental terms explained: TMJ syndrome

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) syndrome is a pain in the jaw joint that can be caused by a variety of medical problems. The TMJ connects the lower jaw to the skull in front of the ear. Certain facial muscles that control chewing are also attached to the lower jaw. Problems in this area can cause head and neck pain, facial pain, ear pain, headaches, a jaw that is locked in position or difficult to open, problems with biting, and jaw clicking or popping sounds when you bite. The temporomandibular joint syndrome is also referred to as the temporomandibular joint disorder.

A-Z of Oral Health: Geographic tongue

Geographic tongue is a common condition. It appears on the top and sides of the tongue, and sometimes on the under-surface. The tongue develops irregular, smooth, red areas, which may look like the outline of a map. There are usually wavy white lines next to the red patches.

You may notice that after a few weeks or months the position of these lines and red patches changes.

It happens because of the way the ‘old' surface of the tongue replaces itself. The top layer of the 'skin' of the tongue does not come away evenly. In some parts the 'skin' comes away too early and so leaves a red, sore area like a scratch on the skin. In other places the skin stays on too long and looks white.

Dental terms explained: sensitive teeth

Sensitive teeth aren’t just an irritation. They can also make it hard for you to eat and drink. For the most part, sensitive tooth pain is sharp, sudden, and temporary. The pain usually occurs when teeth are exposed to cold air or hot, cold, sweet, or acidic foods. Some of the common causes are teeth whitening products, brushin too hard, teeth grinding, irregular flossing and demineralisation caused by sugary foods.

A - Z of Dental Health: Fluoride

Fluoride can greatly help dental health by strengthening the tooth enamel, making it more resistant to tooth decay. It also reduces the amount of acid that the bacteria on your teeth produce.
Children who have fluoride when their teeth are developing tend to have shallower grooves in their teeth, so plaque can be more easily removed. Plaque is a thin, sticky film of bacteria that constantly forms on your teeth.

Fluoride is added to drinking water in many countries around the world.
