Did you know losing a baby tooth too early can lead to major issues?🦷✨

One of the most important jobs a baby tooth has is holding space, keeping a precise gap open in the jaw so that the permanent tooth developing beneath it has exactly the right place to erupt into. 👇

Think of each baby tooth as a placeholder. It sits in the arch, holds the neighbouring teeth apart, and guides the permanent tooth into its correct position when the time comes. When that placeholder is lost too early, through decay, infection, or injury, the neighbouring teeth begin to drift into the empty space. 😟

And when the permanent tooth eventually tries to erupt? The space it needed has been partially or completely taken. It comes through crooked, displaced, or impacted, creating crowding that could have been entirely prevented. 💪

Why do we expand before we align? 🦷✨

It’s one of the most common questions parents ask when Dr Gray recommends an expander before braces and it’s a great question. Here’s the honest answer. 👇

When a child’s upper jaw is too narrow, there simply isn’t enough room for the permanent teeth to come through correctly. Trying to straighten teeth in a jaw that’s too small is like trying to fit furniture into a room that’s too small, it doesn’t matter how carefully you arrange things, there just isn’t enough space. 🏠

Expansion fixes this at the source. By gently widening the upper jaw first, we:

✅ Create the space the teeth need to align correctly
✅ Reduce or eliminate the need for tooth extractions
✅ Correct crossbites caused by a narrow upper arch
✅ Widen the nasal airway, improving breathing and reducing mouth breathing
✅ Make the following brace treatment faster, simpler and more stable

And here’s the most important part this only works while the jaw is still growing. ⏰ Once growth is complete, the same result requires surgery. Which is why the earlier we see your child, the more we can do, simply, comfortably, and without going under the knife.

This patient came to us with narrow dental arches, a common but often overlooked problem where the jaw simply doesn’t have enough width to accommodate the teeth correctly. Left untreated, narrow arches cause crowding, bite problems, and can even affect breathing. 👃

Rather than jumping straight into braces, Dr Gray started by addressing the root cause first. Using expanders to gently widen the upper arch and create the space the teeth needed, then following with full fixed braces to align everything into a beautifully straight, stable result. 🦷💪

16 months later we have straight teeth and wider arches which are perfectly aligned. A smile that is healthier, more functional, and completely transformed. 😁✨

This case is a perfect example of why doing things properly from the start makes all the difference. 💪

When this young patient came to see Dr Gray, he presented with crossbites and significantly skew teeth that needed more than just braces to correct. We started with 8 months of phase 1 treatment using a expanders, developing the jaw, creating the space, and laying the foundation that the second phase needed to work from. 🦷⭐

Once the jaw was ready, we moved into 12 months of full fixed braces to align every tooth into its perfect position. Crossbites corrected. Skew teeth straightened. A smile that is completely transformed. 😁✨

This is what a well-planned, two-phase orthodontic approach can achieve, results that simply wouldn’t have been possible jumping straight into braces without the groundwork first.

This case is one we are incredibly proud of and for good reason. 🙌

When this patient first came to see Dr Gray, the picture was complex. Severe dental crowding, bite issues, and Class 2 malocclusion, where the upper jaw sits too far forward relative to the lower, affecting both the bite and the profile.

For many patients presenting like this, the traditional answer would have been extractions to create space. We took a different route. 🦷💪

Using a combination of a palatal expander to develop the arch and create the space the teeth needed, followed by full fixed braces to align everything precisely, we corrected the crowding, closed the bite, and brought the bite from a Class 2 all the way to a beautiful, stable Class 1.

No extractions. No shortcuts. Just 22 months of careful, planned treatment and a patient who trusted the process every step of the way. 😁✨

The roof of your child’s mouth is the floor of their nasal passage. So when the palate is narrow, the nasal airway above it is narrow too, making it harder to breathe through the nose and forcing the child to breathe through their mouth instead. 😔

This is where a palatal expander changes everything. 🦷💪
