Orthognathic surgery, also known as corrective jaw surgery, repositions the upper jaw, lower jaw or both when the jaws do not align correctly.

It may be considered when jaw position contributes to difficulty biting or chewing, a significant overbite or underbite, facial asymmetry or certain speech and functional concerns.

Treatment is carefully planned and often involves collaboration between an orthodontist and an oral and maxillofacial surgeon.

Jaw pain or swelling that does not settle should not simply be ignored. While there are several possible causes, cysts can sometimes develop within the jaw and may only become noticeable once they grow or cause symptoms.

Dental implants need a stable foundation of healthy jawbone. If there is not enough bone to support an implant, a bone graft may be recommended first.

In some cases, however, bone grafting and implant placement can be performed during the same procedure.

Soft foods deserve better PR. Especially when your jaw is recovering.

Following oral or jaw surgery, you may be advised to temporarily switch to foods that require little or no chewing. Think smoothies, yoghurt, scrambled eggs, mashed vegetables, soups and other soft options.

Your specific diet and how long you need to follow it will depend on your procedure and recovery. Always follow the post-operative instructions provided by your surgical team.

🇳🇬 A Piece of Nigeria Coming Home With Me

One of the memorable moments of my recent visit to Nigeria was spending time at the Nike Art Gallery and having the privilege of meeting Chief Nike Davies-Okundaye — an internationally celebrated Nigerian artist, textile designer and cultural icon.

Her work is deeply rooted in Yoruba heritage, particularly the traditions of Adire textile art, embroidery and beadwork, and her gallery is an extraordinary celebration of African creativity, colour and identity.

I was fortunate to purchase one of her artworks — not simply as something to hang on a wall, but as a reminder of my time in Nigeria and of the remarkable artistic heritage of our continent.

What made the visit even more special was meeting Chief Nike herself. Her warmth, energy and pride in African culture are every bit as striking as the art that surrounds her.

And perhaps my favourite little reminder of the visit is the bracelet I brought home:

“Africa is good. Good Africa.” 🌍

A wonderful experience, a beautiful piece of African art, and a memory I will treasure.

Nigeria, thank you for the hospitality. 🇳🇬🇿🇦
