Maycke is the Dental Hygienist at our orthodontic practice and she works closely with Dr Du Raan to create beautiful smiles.

Her passion for dental hygiene motivated her to complete her Dental Hygiene qualification from the University of the Western Cape, which enabled her to fulfil her dream of working with people in an orthodontic setting.

Maycke is tri-lingual in German, English and Afrikaans. When she is not in the treatment room, she enjoys spending time with her husband and her two boys.

He is enthusiastic about working with people and creating beautiful smiles provides him with a fulfilling work experience.

When he is not practising orthodontics, he can often be found jogging, hiking and enjoying a relaxed braai with family and friends.

Clear aligners are a great alternative for patients who want a straighter smile, but do not want to wear traditional metal braces.

Similar to braces, clear aligners use a gradual force to control tooth movement, but without metal wires or brackets. The aligners are made of a strong plastic material and are fabricated to fit each individual’s mouth. A series of aligners are needed until the desired movement is achieved.

Aligners are also beneficial for patients with previous orthodontic treatment that want to make minor corrections to their smile.

Some problems are much easier to treat if they are caught at an early age. It is advised that children should have an orthodontic evaluation by age 7, even if it is not yet time to begin treatment.

Early evaluation is not necessarily followed by early treatment.

In most cases, if orthodontic work is needed, your child’s growth patterns are monitored until the ideal time for treatment arrives. This creates an opportunity to get the best results in the most efficient way, and to help prevent future problems.

Some orthodontic problems that need to be monitored include:
- Severe crossbite
- Protruding teeth
- Developing underbite
- Severe crowding
