🦷 A missing tooth affects more than just the appearance of your smile. Over time, neighbouring teeth can shift into the open space, changing your bite and creating areas where food and bacteria can collect.

The jawbone in the area can also gradually shrink. More severe bone loss may reduce support for the lips and face, make dentures less stable and complicate future treatments such as dental implants.

Replacing missing teeth early helps preserve your bite, oral function and future treatment options. Depending on your needs, a bridge, denture or dental implant may be recommended.

🍫Chocolate and healthy teeth are not usually words you expect to hear together! Dark chocolate contains cocoa compounds, including tannins and other polyphenols, which research suggests may help limit the growth and activity of certain cavity-causing bacteria.

That does not mean chocolate is suddenly a dental health food, though. Added sugar can still contribute to tooth decay, so chocolate with a higher cocoa content and less sugar is the better choice when the craving hits.

🌱 You read that correctly!

One of the most unusual dental cases ever documented involved a 36-year-old man in Taiwan who had a tiny guava sprout growing from a severely decayed wisdom tooth.

The most likely explanation is that a guava seed became lodged inside the deep cavity, where moisture and organic material created the right conditions for it to germinate. The tooth was extracted, and the sprout was identified as a young guava plant.

While this is an incredibly rare case, it serves as a reminder that untreated tooth decay can create spaces where food and debris become trapped. Keeping up with good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups helps prevent cavities before they become more serious.

🦷 Why do dentists recommend X-rays?

It's a question we hear quite often, especially from patients whose teeth feel perfectly fine.

The reality is that many dental problems begin where they can't be seen during a routine examination. Dental X-rays allow us to look beneath the surface and detect issues before they become painful or require more complex treatment.

X-rays help us:
• Detect cavities hiding between teeth
• Check the health of your tooth roots and jawbone
• Monitor wisdom teeth and developing teeth
• Identify infections, bone loss, cysts, and other hidden concerns

Finding these problems early often means simpler treatment, less discomfort, and better long-term oral health.

If you have any questions about dental X-rays, we're always happy to explain why they're recommended and how they help protect your smile.
