3 HABITS THAT MAY CONTRIBUTE TO TEMPOROMANDIBULAR JOINT PAIN
Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) usually do not result from a single cause. However, certain repetitive habits can increase the load on the chewing muscles and temporomandibular joints, potentially triggering or worsening symptoms.
1. Clenching or grinding your teeth
Many people unconsciously keep their teeth tightly together when concentrating, working, driving, or feeling stressed.
When this continues for long periods, the chewing muscles remain active instead of relaxing in their normal resting position.
Possible signs include jaw muscle fatigue or pain upon waking, tension around the temples, headaches, tooth wear, or a persistent feeling of jaw tightness.
1. Chewing on one side or chewing for too long
Frequently chewing on only one side, chewing gum for long periods, or eating very tough or hard foods can cause the muscles and joints to work repetitively and unevenly.
For people who are already experiencing TMD symptoms, it may be helpful to limit chewing gum and tough or hard foods, and avoid clenching the teeth to reduce strain on the muscles and joints.
1. Keeping the jaw tense or shifted for prolonged periods
Habits such as resting your chin on your hand, pushing the lower jaw forward, holding the jaw to one side, biting pens, or biting your nails may increase strain on the chewing muscles and temporomandibular joints when repeated frequently.
TMD is a multifactorial condition. These three habits do not necessarily cause TMD on their own, but they may act as triggering or aggravating factors in some people.
If jaw pain, muscle fatigue, joint clicking, or difficulty opening the mouth occurs frequently, a professional evaluation is recommended to determine the underlying cause.
