It's not the filling that causes the toothache, it's the size of the cavity.

When a cavity is small, the repair is usually small too. But as decay grows, more healthy tooth structure is lost, and the treatment needed becomes more extensive. What could have been a simple filling may eventually require a crown, root canal, or even an extraction.

The best time to treat a cavity is before it starts to hurt. Catching decay early can help save tooth structure, reduce costs, and keep treatment much simpler.

Cavities don’t just happen overnight, they’re built from the little things we do every day.

After we eat or drink something with sugar or starch, bacteria in the mouth get to work. They feed on those leftovers and produce acid, which slowly starts breaking down tooth enamel. Over time, that’s how decay begins.

It can be as simple as sipping on sweet drinks for a long time, snacking often, skipping flossing, or not brushing before bed. Even dry mouth can make it easier for bacteria to stick around and do damage.

Your daily routine has a big impact. Brushing twice a day, flossing once a day, drinking water, and keeping up with regular cleanings can really help keep cavities away.
