We know you amassed that stockpile of sugar yesterday! Remember, you must still enjoy it responsibly, which means:

- Eat sweet treats along with a meal so that your other foods dilute the full effects of the sugar in your mouth. Stay away from snacking all day long; this habit bathes your teeth in sugar and doesn't give saliva a chance to naturally cleanse your mouth.

- Go easy on sticky, gooey candies, which can stick to your teeth or dislodge fillings and crowns, and the hard, crunchy candies that can chip or break teeth.

- Brush for least 2 minutes twice a day and floss. And if you're not able to brush right after a meal, chew some sugar-free gum that is sweetened with xylitol instead! Chewing activates your salivary glands and helps cleanse your mouth of food and debris.

According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, smoking is the biggest risk factor for gum disease. That risk increases depending on how long and how much a person smokes. This means that smokers, especially heavy smokers have a higher rate of gum infection, jawbone deterioration, and tooth loss. Simply put, the more and longer you smoke directly increases your risks of gum infection and tooth loss.

With fall sports on our minds, it’s a good time to talk about the best ways to protect your mouth. If you or your kids are planning to play football, basketball, hockey, soccer, or any other sport, a mouthguard is one of the most critical pieces of safety equipment to invest in.

According to the ADA, the risk of damage to the mouth during sports activity is reduced 6x by using mouth guards! And more than 200,000 sports-related oral injuries are prevented annually in the United States.

Whether it’s a contact, limited contact, or non-contact sport – such as softball, basketball, volleyball, martial arts, mountain biking, or gymnastics – we recommend protective mouth wear whenever there is a risk of injury.

To learn more about mouth guards, please give us a call or mention it during your next appointment.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 100 million adults in the United States have diabetes or pre-diabetes. While diabetes can cause eye, foot and heart problems, it can also impact your gum health. 🦷 f you have diabetes, it’s important that you meet with us to create an action plan. That plan will differ slightly from one individual to another, but it generally includes the following 3 elements:

1. Take appropriate steps to control blood sugar: this includes taking the medications prescribed by your doctor. Other actions, like getting more exercise and eating a more nutritious diet can also be beneficial.

2. Don’t smoke: if you don’t smoke already, don’t start. If you do smoke and have diabetes or gum disease (or both) talk to your doctor about available treatments to slowly wean you off ni****ne over time.

3. Effectively brush and floss your teeth: brushing and flossing might seem like second nature, but there’s a right way and a wrong way to do them. Ask your dentist how best to keep your teeth clean.

Diabetes is a serious, chronic condition, but there are positive steps you can take to keep it under control.

You might have thought that all of these would come from your family doctor—but in fact, the demonstrated relationship between diabetes and gum disease means that you should also work with your dentist to create an effective plan to prevent gum disease and, by extension, help control your diabetes.
