Have you noticed small notches near the gumline of your teeth? This could be tooth abfraction, a condition caused by excessive stress on the teeth from clenching, grinding, or an unbalanced bite. Over time, this stress weakens the enamel, leading to sensitivity, structural damage, and an increased risk of decay.

If left untreated, abfraction can worsen, affecting both the strength and health of your teeth. At Van Alstine Family Dentistry, Dr. Van Alstine can help identify the cause and recommend the best treatment, whether it’s a nightguard, bite adjustment, or restorative care.

Did you know that dental crowns and caps are essentially the same thing? Dental caps are tooth-shaped "caps" fit over your natural tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, and appearance. If you're dealing with a damaged or weakened tooth, a crown might be just what you need to get your smile back on track. 👑🦷

What's the difference between them? A dental crown is a full-coverage restoration that fits over a damaged or weakened tooth or implant to protect and strengthen it. In contrast, a dental cap usually covers only part of the tooth, often used when damage is limited and preserving natural tooth structure is a priority.

If you frequently reach for a piece of gum after a meal, you may be surprised to learn that you might actually be helping your teeth. Let's chew on this: while sugary gum is a definite no-no, sugar-free gum can have some perks. It stimulates saliva production, which helps neutralize acids and wash away food particles. It can also help prevent cavities by removing food particles from the surfaces of your teeth. Look for gums with xylitol for added cavity-fighting power. 💪
