Plaque is one of those things almost everyone has heard of… but most people don’t realize how quickly it shows up.
It’s a soft, sticky film that forms on your teeth every single day. It’s made of bacteria mixed with saliva and tiny food particles, and it loves to hang out along the gumline and between teeth.
Here’s how it happens: when you eat or drink anything with sugars or starches (think bread, crackers, soda, coffee sweeteners), the bacteria in your mouth use that as fuel. As they grow, they create a thin layer that sticks to teeth. And even if you brushed this morning, plaque can start building again within hours.
Why it matters: plaque bacteria produce acids that can weaken enamel and lead to cavities. Plaque also irritates gums, which can cause redness, tenderness, and bleeding. If it’s not removed, it can harden into tartar, which can’t be brushed off at home and usually needs a professional cleaning. Over time, that buildup can contribute to gum disease.
The good news is plaque is manageable with consistency: brush twice a day, clean between your teeth daily, and keep up with regular dental cleanings.
The best way to control plaque is simple consistency: brush twice a day, clean between your teeth daily, and keep up with regular dental cleanings.
