Trick or Treat
We hope you are having a very happy October! Its time to carve pumpkins and think of the perfect Halloween costume. Everyone loves to Trick-or-Treat and if you have braces you don’t have to miss out on the fun!
Remember, braces are fragile, and strong forces from hard foods will break them off. Damaged appliances will extend treatment time. Extended treatment time will increase the risk of cavities and stains on your teeth.
Generally any sticky, hard, chewy or crunchy foods should be limited or avoided. The American Association of Orthodontics recommends avoiding foods such as caramel, nuts, licorice, jelly beans, hard pretzels, bubble gum, candy corn, lollipops, taco chips and ice.
Soft, easy-to-chew foods are acceptable Halloween treats. The American Association of Orthodontics suggests foods like melt-in-your-mouth-chocolates, peanut butter cups, milk shakes, gelatin, ice cream and thin sliced apples.
You don't want your dental health to be a scary affair, so be sure to brush and floss after your Halloween excitement. This will dislodge any candy and other foods stuck in the braces.
We hope you have a fun and safe Halloween!!

Orthodontic check-up at age 7?

It is recommended by the American Association of Orthodontics that your child should get an orthodontic check-up by age 7. Why so early? Most people think of teenagers with braces but there are good reasons for young children to see the orthodontist.
Early treatment can guide jaw growth, lower the risk of injury to protruded front teeth, prevent open mouth breathing, and make treatment less complicated and shorter later. Starting treatment before the face and jaws have finished growing gives the orthodontist more treatment options and can prevent jaw surgery in the future. For example, an expander to widen the upper jaw in patients with very small and narrow mouths might not be possible without surgery in the teenage years when the jaw bones are inflexible.
Harmful oral habits such as thumb sucking can cause the upper front teeth to stick out and require removal of permanent teeth in the future for ideal correction. Orthodontists can eliminate this habit and save your child from having teeth that are spaced and protruding.
Even though your child’s teeth look straight and still has many baby teeth, there could be a problem that only an orthodontist can detect. The orthodontist will check the development of the teeth and jaw bones and can intervene at the appropriate time. Most children will not require early treatment but having a complimentary exam will give your child the best opportunity for a healthy and beautiful smile.
