A front tooth is not one flat colour, which is the whole reason this is difficult.

It is more translucent along the biting edge, warmer up near the gum, and it
handles light in a way a single shade of material never will. So the composite
goes on the way the tooth is actually built — in layers, in different shades, one
set before the next goes over it.

Get that wrong and you have a repair that announces itself. Get it right and she
just has her tooth back.

The worry with a front tooth is not whether it can be fixed. It's whether anyone
will be able to tell.

This one was rebuilt in layered composite, added to the tooth rather than
covering it, and built in shades so the edge stays translucent the way enamel is.

Any dentist can do this procedure. Not every dentist will get this result, and
that gap is the real thing you're choosing when you choose who does the work.

The alternatives are not equal either. A repair that doesn't quite match will
catch your eye for as long as it's in your mouth. A veneer on the single tooth
still has to match the one next to it, and often doesn't. Veneers across several
teeth solve that by permanently reshaping teeth that had nothing wrong with them.

One tooth, nothing covered. That's the conservative version — it just takes the
time and the skill to make it disappear.

Matching a filling to a tooth is not really about colour.

Shade gets you most of the way, but a tooth is not a flat surface. It has cusps
that catch light, grooves that run in a particular direction, and edges that are
sharper in some places than others. Rebuild those and the repair disappears. Skip
them and you get a smooth white patch that would read as a filling from across
the room on a front tooth, no matter how well the shade was chosen.

"I got my tooth back again."

That's her, the first time she saw it.

A corner had broken off one of her front teeth, right at the middle, which is
impossible to hide unless you just stop smiling.

It was a small chip. That is exactly the kind of thing people talk themselves out
of fixing, and exactly how something small ends up deciding how often you smile.

It was rebuilt in layered composite, built up in shades directly on the tooth,
then shaped and polished until there was nothing left to pick out. Nothing was
covered, and nothing was taken off the teeth either side of it.

If you want to know how a dentist will treat your front teeth, look at what they
do to your back ones.

This is a lower premolar. Nobody is ever going to see it. The old silver filling
came out, and what went back in was rebuilt to match the tooth it belongs to —
cusps where the cusps were, grooves following the natural anatomy, shaded so it
reads as tooth rather than as filling.

A flat white filling would have worked too, and it would have taken a fraction of
the time. The only person who would ever know the difference is the one doing it.

That's the tell. If you want great results, you should expect great results
everywhere — not just on the teeth that show.

Today is a bittersweet day at Red Lion Dental — it’s officially our last day with one of our amazing hygienists! 🥹🦷

Of course, we couldn’t let her leave quietly… so we’re celebrating with lunch, an ice cream cake, and a little trip down memory lane with some of our favorite Liz bloopers. 😂🎥

We’ve shared a lot of laughs, great memories, and probably a few moments she wishes we DIDN’T catch on camera. 🤣

Liz, we’re so thankful for everything you’ve brought to our team and for all the patients you’ve cared for along the way. While we’re excited for your next chapter, Red Lion Dental definitely won’t be the same without you!💜

And because a normal “good luck” cake just wouldn’t be us… we had to send her off Red Lion Dental style. 😜🎂

Rebuilding the chipped tooth on its own would not have fixed his smile.

The broken corner was the obvious problem, and it would have been the easy thing
to deal with in isolation. But the teeth around it were crowded, and a perfectly
rebuilt tooth sitting in a crooked arch still reads as a crooked smile — careful
work that leaves you looking at more or less what you walked in with.

So the teeth were straightened with Invisalign first, and the corner was rebuilt
in layered composite afterwards, matched to where everything finished rather than
where it started.

He didn't break this tooth because his teeth were crooked. It was trauma, and
that happens to people with perfectly straight teeth too.

The order of treatment still mattered though. Rebuilding a tooth back to its
original shape while it's sitting out of position is very difficult and sometimes
not really possible — you end up recreating the right shape in the wrong place.
Straightening first put the tooth where it belonged, and only then was the corner
rebuilt, so the new edge could blend into a finished smile rather than a crooked
one.

Those small bumps on the teeth in the first photo are attachments. They give the
aligners something to grip, and they come off at the end.

A perfect smile isn't supposed to look perfect. It's supposed to look like teeth —
yours, straight, with nothing missing from the front one.

His were straightened first, and the chipped corner was rebuilt afterwards so it
could be matched to where the teeth actually finished rather than where they
started.
