Rebuilding the chipped tooth on its own would not have fixed his smile.

The broken corner was the obvious problem, and it would have been the easy thing
to deal with in isolation. But the teeth around it were crowded, and a perfectly
rebuilt tooth sitting in a crooked arch still reads as a crooked smile — careful
work that leaves you looking at more or less what you walked in with.

So the teeth were straightened with Invisalign first, and the corner was rebuilt
in layered composite afterwards, matched to where everything finished rather than
where it started.

He didn't break this tooth because his teeth were crooked. It was trauma, and
that happens to people with perfectly straight teeth too.

The order of treatment still mattered though. Rebuilding a tooth back to its
original shape while it's sitting out of position is very difficult and sometimes
not really possible — you end up recreating the right shape in the wrong place.
Straightening first put the tooth where it belonged, and only then was the corner
rebuilt, so the new edge could blend into a finished smile rather than a crooked
one.

Those small bumps on the teeth in the first photo are attachments. They give the
aligners something to grip, and they come off at the end.

started.

Rebuilding the corner of a front tooth is the straightforward part. Making the
repair disappear is the whole job.

A front tooth was never one flat colour. It's more translucent along the biting
edge, warmer up near the gum, and it handles light in a way a single shade of
filling material simply won't. So the composite goes on the way the tooth is
actually built — in layers, in different shades, each one set before the next
goes over it.

Get that wrong and you have a patch that announces itself in every photograph.
Get it right and there is nothing left to notice.

When a corner breaks off a front tooth it lands in the one place you can't hide
it, right at the middle of your smile where everyone's eye goes first.

This one was rebuilt in layered composite, built up in shades directly on the
tooth and then shaped and polished against its neighbour until the two of them
read as a matched pair again.

That part is worth understanding, because the alternatives are not equal. A
repair that doesn't quite match will catch your eye for as long as it's in your
mouth. A veneer on the single tooth still has to match the one beside it, and
often doesn't. Veneering several teeth so they match each other solves that, but
it costs considerably more and means permanently reshaping healthy teeth that had
nothing wrong with them.

One tooth, no cover over the rest of it, nothing taken from the teeth either side.
That's the conservative version — it just takes the skill to make it disappear.
