Your child’s brain lights up when they try a new flavor. It’s not just about taste 🍓🧠 Flavor activates language when they describe it. Emotion when they like or dislike it. Memory when they recognize it again 💭 Every bite builds more than a palate. It shapes how they learn 💡 They’re not just eating. They’re learning how to eat 🍽️ Flavor is a skill, not a phase.

So many families are dealing with colds right now! Most kids with a cold will recover on their own with some extra rest and fluids and do not need to be seen by a doctor. But some kids might need to be seen by their pediatrician. Here’s when to call your pediatrician if your child has a cold. And remember, babies 3 months and younger with cold symptoms should always be seen right away by their pediatrician.

In 2017 the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) came out with a new recommendation that children under age one should not be offered juice as a part of their diet. They also recommend limiting juice to no more than 4 ounces per day in toddlers and young children up to age 6 years and to only 8 ounces per day for age 7 to 18 years. Instead parents should focus more on whole fruit.

Here are 4 reasons why you should skip juice:

1. Excess sugar promotes obesity

2. Bathing the teeth in fruit juice can lead to tooth decay.

3. Fruit juice starts a pattern of craving sugary drinks.

4. Parenting around juice can be challenging.

See post for more detail and always contact your pediatrician if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child's nutrition.

Jennifer Anderson from Kids Eat in Color finds the *number one* reason that parents start pressuring their toddler at mealtime is that they are worried that their toddler isn’t eating enough. They think their toddler should be eating more.

The amount kids need to eat varies so much! But it can be normal for them to eat less than they did as a baby AND it can be normal for them to eat as much as you! Eating a lot or a little is very common and we don’t need to pressure them to eat a different amount - give them the space to choose whether to eat a lot or a little.

Pressuring kids to eat more (or less), can make it more difficult to hear their own hunger and fullness feelings. These feelings are important for us to be able to hear at any age—and we can help them notice these feelings as they get older by letting them choose how much to eat.

The MMR vaccine is safe and very effective at preventing measles. Vaccine side effects are mild compared to how sick measles can make children and the side effects happen as the MMR vaccine teaches a child’s immune system how to recognize and fight measles. After being vaccinated with MMR, children develop lasting immunity to measles and help protect others in their community. Contact us with questions about measles or the MMR vaccine.

Good flavor is a language 💬 Helping kids build flavor literacy makes them more curious, brave, and playful at the table! Next time you eat together, try using words like: • 🥒 Zingy – for pickles or citrus • 🌶️ Peppery – for radishes or arugula • 🥜 Toasty – for roasted nuts or seeds The more they can name, the more they can notice! Start naming flavors with your little one this week!
