Lots of great moments today, but when a mini mouth is as balanced as this after a year, and you get a hot tip on keeping old horses looking amazing through winter, we’re calling it an extra good day! ⭐️🐴pic is pre-dental, you better believe I took care of those couple ridges :-)⭐️🐴 also, yes, that’s a giant wolf tooth, no this little pony never wears a bit, and is not leaving this farm so we made an executive decision to leave it alone!

As a token of appreciation for all our hardworking colleagues in the barns, we would like to honor your work today. We know that equine dentistry that serves the entire equine population would not be possible without equine dental practitioners who treat horses in the field every day.

Similar to human medicine, not every horse requires advanced diagnostics for routine care. Not every case requires an endoscopic, radiographic, or even a CT examination, let alone endodontic treatment or extraction. We thank the equine dental practitioners who, during their examinations with headlamps and mirrors or oral endoscopes, are able to detect issues and decide whether further diagnostic evaluation by a veterinarian, who is specialized in equine dentistry, is necessary. We appreciate those who then refer those cases.

Every horse every year! Certified provider know exactly what to do or in this case, not do, for every individual case. Mouths like this can be prevented with consistent care that starts at a young age.

Sometimes, a float isn’t the solution. I know, I know- I wish I could wave my magic wand and make it all better too.

While there are minimal tweaks that could be made to make this guy a little more comfortable, the exam is what will make the biggest impact. Why? Because now the owner knows. The weight loss wasn’t caused by lack of feed or hay. The choke makes sense now. Their diet can be adjusted to a soupy mash and this old guy can thrive again

Mouths like this don’t happen overnight. It takes years of dental neglect to get to this point. Whichever tooth was the most prominent took the grunt of the pressure. When that one wore out, it was the next one then the next one. (The owner of this horse had just recently acquired it)

How can you prevent this? Thorough dental exams and FULL MOUTH EQUILIBRATION every year. “Knocking off sharp points” simply won’t do it

Very good study about how much incisors erupt over time! Balancing incisors is so important.

💥Program Length & IAED Certification Requirements💥

We frequently receive questions about program length and IAED certification. Our program operates as a licensed career/trade school affiliated with the Texas Workforce Commission.

💥Admissions Requirements
Students must be at least 18 years old and possess a high school diploma or GED. Prior horsemanship skills and knowledge are strongly encouraged.

💥Program Structure
The program consists of three 10-day semesters. Each semester begins with three days of anatomy and instruction on aging horses by their teeth, followed by six days of hands-on training in the wet lab. Most horses worked on for training are recipient mares, allowing students extensive supervised experience under an IAED-certified equine dental provider and a veterinarian. The final day of each semester concludes with lectures.
What sets our school apart is the unlimited hands-on experience available to students.

💥IAED Certification Preparation
The ultimate goal of our program is to prepare students for IAED certification. IAED requires a minimum of 240 hours of education from an accredited equine dental school, along with a documented number of completed cases. We carefully evaluate each student’s progress to determine readiness for certification.

To meet the required hours, students must attend at least three semesters. Most complete all three and then participate in additional wet labs for further preparation. We offer six sessions per year, and students may choose any three to fulfill their requirements. However we discourage coming 3 classes in a row as not enough experience is achieved in between schools with that short window.

Graduates of our program have an 80% pass rate on the IAED certification exams. Certification includes both a written and practical exam, and students must score at least 80% on each. Students who do not pass are invited to return for additional anatomy review and wet-lab training before attempting the exam again.

💥Maintaining IAED Certification
To keep IAED certification current, providers must complete continuing education (CE) every two years. Most graduates attend the annual IAED conference to satisfy this requirement. We also recently hosted an IAED-approved two-day wet lab that provides six CE hours.

💥Tuition & Financial Aid
Tuition is charged per semester and is due at the start of each term. We accept scholarships that fund career-school programs. While we do not currently offer in-house scholarships, we are in the process of developing one and pursuing VA approval for GI Bill benefits.

💥Tools & Equipment
We partner with two vendors to offer complete tool packages required for hands-on training. One vendor also provides payment plan options.
