I personally clench my teeth while I sleep. It was more frequent when I was trying to get into dental school, eased up a bit during school, and then increased again after having a child. I wear my Invisalign retainers, but you can definitely see signs of wear and tear from clenching—and it’s almost time for a new set. If I skip wearing them even for a night, I notice increased sensitivity the next day.
This past week, we saw so many cases of fractured and worn teeth. Most of the patients experienced discomfort while chewing or sensitivity to cold or sweets. A couple of cases, unfortunately, had teeth fractured through and through—beyond saving. I tend to see this most often in premolars that have large silver or composite fillings.
Prevention is always the best approach, especially when it comes to our health.
When it comes to fractured teeth, here are a few key preventive steps:
• First, make sure your teeth are properly aligned and your bite isn’t causing trauma. Braces or Invisalign can help with that.
• Second, wear a night guard or orthodontic retainers to protect your teeth while you sleep. Custom-made retainers or night guards are a very affordable and effective option.
Of course, every case is unique. Other solutions may be available depending on your specific situation and medical history. Be sure to consult your dentist to find what’s best for you.
