One of my first paintings— I painted it in 2003 while in college.
My parents hung it proudly in their home.
When they downsized, available wall space lessened, and they gave it back to me.
I was prohibited from hanging it proudly in my marital home.
She sat alone in the dark, neglected.
Recently, I pulled her from the darkness, cleaned the layers that should have never accumulated on her, and brought her back to life— much like myself.
Today, I hung her on my wall with love and pride— for her and for myself.

This is my why.
I remember my path, I remember my journey, and I remember every point of uncertainty along the way.
What line of work should I go into? What branch of medicine should I go into? What specialty should I pursue?
This. Is. My. Calling.
And I am so grateful that Divine guidance brought me here—
So that I can make children feel safe, make them feel heard, make them feel that their concerns are valid and that they are being cared for in a safe way, and to empower them by reminding them that they can do hard things.
I’m especially thankful when I’m given an opportunity to offer calm and clarity to a family that was desparately looking for those things but didn’t know where to look.
And then the Universe brings them through my doors.
This sweet little one has anxiety and is on the autism spectrum.
I am the fourth dentist to see him in a matter of months, and how lucky for me that the other offices weren’t the right fit for him to demonstrate what he’s capable of— because of that, I was blessed with meeting him and his mom.
With patience, kindness, validation, and a sense of calm, I was able to guide him through an AMAZING and successful appointment, during which he had numerous cavities treated.
Treating children is a beautiful privilege— we have the unique opportunity to bestow upon them the gift of safety that can remain with them for the rest of their lives.

Among the fun nuances of working with kids and hearing the funny things they say are the nicknames they come up with for me.
I met these boys when they were toddlers. They wanted to call me by my full name: Dr. Denise Cohen. Their little selves couldn’t pronounce it, and instead their mouths produced my new name, by which they still call me: Dr. Afikoman (which is the name of an element of the Passover seder) 😂😂❤️❤️. I accept my name with honor, as it is one of the cutest things I’ve ever heard 🥰🥰

A decade later, I still marvel at how beautifully my office turned out. I had a vision– bright, airy, inviting, timeless, neutral with pops of color. A space where all ages would feel welcome. I had so much fun sourcing and choosing every detail to bring that vision to life. I’m proud of how beautifully it turned out. And that my vision did indeed become the welcoming space I wanted it to be.
