Peter walked into my office earlier this year with his sunken face, saying that the hospital had lost both his dentures after his heart surgery. His tone was peaceful, but he seemed sad and tired without his dentures supporting his cheek and lips.

Brokenhearted, I told myself that I must help him and to give his teeth back. It was not an easy journey for Peter nor for our team. Living alone, Peter was recovering from severe congestive heart failure when I first met him. He was commuting by himself between his numerous medical and dental appointments.

In our earlier appointments with him, we found out that Peter also was suffering from his left foot pain.

At first only his left foot was in pain. Then his left foot had an exposed bone, with pain. Then his right foot also had an exposed bone, also in pain. He had been instructed to walk as much as possible because of the built-up water in his lung, so he, with his blue and black backpack, always endured the trek to my office for his appointments, with pain and exposed bone in both feet. His lung was constantly filled with water that even breathing while sitting was laborious for him, not to mention having his mouth filled with dental impression materials.

Peter was an inspiring patient. Despite facing his daily obstacles and difficulties alone without family support, he worked with me and my team with peace, patience, friendliness, and kindness.

Earlier this week I had the pleasure of having my last appointment with him of this three-month journey. We have completed all the post-op refinement and adjustment appointments. Peter now has a natural, age-appropriate smile with no sore spots and no pain. Coincidentally he just got a haircut before this appointment!

I was so inspired by him and happy for him that I had to ask him to take a picture with me. I felt so honored to be the dentist giving his smile back!
