The 2027 Legislative Session won’t kick off until January 11, but did you know that the ODA started developing its legislative agenda as early as spring 2026?

We start by hearing from members about challenges they’re facing in their own practices and suggestions for legislative solutions. Those concepts are evaluated by the ODA’s Regulatory Affairs Council (RAC) and advocacy staff, who provide recommendations on the efficacy of the concepts and outside factors that may influence the likelihood of a policy advancing through the legislative process.

Once the policies have been agreed upon by the RAC, they are presented to the ODA Board of Trustees, who vote on the association’s official legislative agenda.

This year, the Board of Trustees voted to approve the 2027 ODA Legislative Agenda in late July, nearly six months before the 2027 Legislative Session even begins!

Naughton, Stokes, Amberena Fairlee , Eddie Ramirez , Julie Spaniel , Caroline Zeller, DDS, MPH (not pictured) and ODA Executive Director, Barry J Taylor are in Indianapolis, IN, for the 2026 ADA House of Delegates. The ADA is addressing issues such as workforce, dental insurance reform, and modernizing the ADA this week among many other issues.

What happens when persistence meets advocacy?

A barrier comes down and more patients gain access to care. 🦷

After moving to Oregon, Karla Brumley was ready to return to the restorative dentistry she loved. There was just one obstacle: Oregon initially did not recognize the training she had completed in California.

Karla didn’t give up. With support from Dr. Matt Johnston and the ODA, she advocated for a closer review by the Oregon Board of Dentistry and the Dental Assisting National Board.

The result? Her program was approved, and she can now use her skills to serve patients in Grants Pass. 🙌
