Many parents use a bedtime bottle to help their baby fall asleep, but this common habit can quietly increase the risk of Early Childhood Caries (Baby Bottle Caries)—one of the most preventable dental diseases in young children.

When a baby falls asleep with milk, formula, juice, or other sweetened drinks in the mouth, natural saliva production drops during sleep. With less saliva to wash away sugars, cavity-causing bacteria have hours to produce acids that gradually dissolve the thin enamel of baby teeth. Because primary teeth are more delicate than permanent teeth, decay can progress surprisingly quickly.

Baby teeth are not "temporary" in terms of importance. They help children chew comfortably, speak clearly, maintain proper jaw development, and preserve space for permanent teeth. Untreated decay can lead to pain, infection, difficulty eating, disturbed sleep, and premature tooth loss that may affect future dental alignment.

Simple daily habits can dramatically reduce the risk. Avoid putting babies to bed with bottles containing milk, juice, or sweetened drinks—water is the safest bedtime option. Clean the gums before teeth erupt, brush as soon as the first tooth appears with an age-appropriate amount of fluoride toothpaste, transition from bottles to cups around the first year of life, and schedule the first dental visit by age one.

A few preventive steps during infancy can protect a child's smile for years to come.
