As a dentist and a mom, this one surprises parents the most.
Goldfish and similar crackers like Cheez Its, pretzels, and graham crackers are not sweet, but they are made of refined starches that quickly convert to sugar in the mouth. Because they are sticky and tend to get packed into molars, they sit there feeding bacteria long after snack time is over.
That means longer acid attacks and higher cavity risk.
This does not mean your child can never have them. It means:
✔️ Offer them with meals instead of frequent grazing
✔️ Have your child rinse with water afterward
✔️ Help with brushing until they are old enough to tie their shoes
During Children’s Dental Health Month, we are focused on small changes that protect little smiles long term.
The ADA, AAPD, and American Medical Association all agree children should see a dentist by age 1. If your child has not been established with a dentist yet, now is the perfect time. We are accepting new patients and would love to care for your family.
