1. Give them a few options so they “pick out” the brush. They get to choose their favorite color, character etc
2. Toothpaste flavor choices: My patients’ favorites are Tom’s fluoridated silly strawberry and Burt’s Bees Fruit punch but there are so many great ones! (That goes for fun flossers and rinses, if your child can spit, too). Remember to use a rice grain amount of toothpaste before age 3 and a pea sized amount after age 3)
3. Sing a song to help pass the time brushing 🎵
4. Children shouldn’t brush their teeth completely on their own until they can tie their own shoes so you can make it team effort until then! You can model proper brushing technique and then check/help to make sure your LO “brushed all the sugar bugs away”
5. Brushing/flossing reward chart (Ex: If we brush 2x/day and floss 1x/day for a week then we earn a special reward). Lots of options to download if you google “toothbrushing chart”
6. Educational books and activities to boost confidence and teach children why it is so important to take care of their 🦷.
