Gum disease is increasingly recognized as a condition that extends beyond oral health. A scientific statement from the American Heart Association, published in Circulation, highlights its association with multiple cardiovascular conditions, including heart attack, stroke, and heart failure.

The connection is believed to involve chronic inflammation and oral bacteria entering the bloodstream, which may affect blood vessel function over time. Periodontal disease is also widespread, affecting more than 40% of adults globally, especially those with diabetes or smoking habits.

While direct causation is still under investigation, maintaining good oral hygiene may help reduce inflammatory burden and support heart health.

A new study from Hiroshima University highlights a surprising link between oral health and heart rhythm. The gum-disease bacterium Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) can enter the bloodstream and infiltrate heart tissue, promoting fibrosis that distorts cardiac structure, disrupts electrical signals, and increases the risk of atrial fibrillation (AFib).

In experiments, mice exposed to P. gingivalis had higher rates of inducible AFib, while human atrial tissue from AFib patients showed correlations between bacterial presence and severe gum disease.

These findings underscore the importance of maintaining oral hygiene and managing periodontitis not only for healthy gums and teeth but also as a potential safeguard against broader cardiovascular complications.

Skipping brushing before bed may do more than cause cavities it could raise serious heart risks. A 2023 study in Scientific Reports analyzed 1,675 patients and found that those who skipped nighttime brushing experienced higher rates of hospitalizations for heart failure and irregular heartbeat.

The mechanism is straightforward: leftover plaque allows harmful bacteria to thrive overnight, promoting gum disease. Infected gums release inflammatory chemicals into the bloodstream, which can strain blood vessels and damage the heart over time.

Maintaining nightly brushing isn’t just about a fresh mouth it’s a crucial habit for cardiovascular health. By removing plaque before sleep, you lower bacterial buildup, reduce inflammation, and help protect your heart.

A recent study reveals that Porphyromonas gingivalis, a major bacterium in chronic periodontitis, can travel from infected gums to the heart and trigger structural changes. Researchers found bacterial DNA in the left atrial appendage, a key area for maintaining normal cardiac rhythm, during heart surgeries.

This oral pathogen was linked to myocardial fibrosis, the buildup of scar tissue in heart muscle that disrupts electrical conduction and increases the risk of atrial fibrillation, a serious arrhythmia associated with stroke and heart failure. This marks the first direct connection between P. gingivalis and structural heart remodeling.

The study highlights the importance of oral hygiene and early periodontal care, showing that managing gum inflammation may protect not only teeth but also long-term heart health.

Did you know your dentist can help with more than your teeth? They can also help improve your sleep. 🦷💤

Oral appliance therapy is a custom, dentist‑fitted treatment that can help keep the airway open during sleep—especially for people with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea who are unable to tolerate CPAP therapy.

When coordinated through an accredited sleep center, oral appliance therapy involves diagnosis by a sleep physician, custom-fitting by a specially trained dentist, and ongoing follow-up care with your sleep team.

Bruxism often happens unconsciously, especially during sleep, putting excessive pressure on teeth over time. This can gradually erode the outer enamel, exposing the dentin beneath, which may cause sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods. In severe cases, continued grinding can affect the tooth’s pulp, resulting in pain, inflammation, or the need for treatments like root canals.

Early signs include jaw soreness, morning headaches, or visibly worn teeth. Consulting a dentist promptly can prevent long-term damage, protect tooth structure, and reduce the risk of more invasive dental procedures later.

Also make note: Bruxism can be a sign of something far more insidious- Sleep Apnea.
We have tools to screen for this in the comfort of your own home and can fabricate appliances in the proper situations.

A recent study highlights a strong connection between oral health and brain wellness. Researchers found that adults with both untreated cavities and gum disease faced a much higher chance of ischemic stroke compared to people with healthy mouths.

The reason appears linked to long-term inflammation. Bacteria from decayed teeth and inflamed gums can enter the bloodstream, irritating blood vessels and encouraging clot formation that disrupts normal brain circulation.

Encouragingly, the study also showed prevention matters. Regular dental visits and professional cleanings greatly lowered the chances of having both conditions. This research reinforces that caring for teeth and gums may also support long-term brain and heart health.

Every tooth contains a soft core called the pulp, which houses nerves and blood vessels essential for keeping the tooth alive and healthy. These nerves are highly sensitive, capable of detecting temperature changes, pressure, and even slight discomfort.

When a cavity grows deep enough to approach the pulp, it irritates these delicate nerves. This irritation often manifests as sharp pain or heightened sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods. It’s your body’s natural warning system, signaling that the tooth requires attention before the decay progresses further.

Understanding the role of the pulp emphasizes the importance of early dental care. Prompt treatment of cavities can prevent more serious problems, preserve tooth vitality, and maintain overall oral health.
