As children grow, their mouths are changing too. New permanent teeth are still developing, brushing often becomes less supervised, and diets start including more sugary snacks and drinks. That combination can make kids more likely to get cavities than many parents realize.

The good news? Cavities are largely preventable with:
✨ Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
✨ Daily flossing
✨ Healthy snack choices
✨ Regular dental checkups

Growing smiles need growing care. Help protect those new teeth today for a healthier smile tomorrow!

Can You Brush Your Teeth Too Much?

Brushing for longer than two minutes is not harmful, as long as you're using firm but gentle pressure. Using too much pressure can damage enamel and gum tissue, leading to tooth sensitivity and irritated gums. Try brushing with your non-dominant hand to realize the difference in the amount of pressure on your teeth.

Remember to use short strokes, moving back and forth against the teeth and gums, on every tooth. Reach behind the front teeth and your back molars too. Also, cleaning between your teeth is just as important as brushing.

When it comes to keeping your family's teeth healthy, it's important to ensure they brush and floss, but it's just as important to be mindful of what they put in their mouth. There is a long list of foods and drinks that are bad for your teeth. In fact, they can actually hinder or reverse any good your dental routine is doing.

Sugar drinks, such as fruit juices and soft drinks, are definitely on this list. Although they are the go-to beverage for children everywhere, they are not the best choice. Drinking too much can cause a host of dental problems, including gum disease, tooth decay, dental cavities and even bad breath.

If you are planning on weaning your child from using a pacifier soon, do what works best for your family!
The most important thing is that your child is shown lots of support and love throughout the process.
Here are some weaning tips that might help you in this process:
• Stopping Cold turkey.
• Pacifier Fairy.
• Place inside a toy at Build a Bear or other stuffed animal.
• Exchanging for a special gift or something they want.
• Prepping with books and videos.
• Cutting tip of pacifier off little by little.
• Poking holes in pacifier tip.
• Leaving pacifier for Santa/Elf on the shelf.
• Attaching to ballon and having a ceremony for it. #
• Use only at naps and night sleeping

As your child’s teeth develop, be sure they continue to grow good oral hygiene habits:

-Teach them proper oral care practices of brushing twice and flossing once a day from an early age.
-Encourage them to continue to care for their smiles through fun toothpaste flavors, toothbrushes featuring their favorite characters, and interactive apps that help them brush longer and more effectively.
- Visit the dentist twice a year with their first appointment scheduled right after their first tooth emerges.

Some parents may let their kids eat sweets and starchy snacks, but they don't have the duties a sidekick to a Tooth Fairy has. By eating fruits and vegetables, they'll be fueling their bacteria-fighting superpowers!
Whereas evil bacteria feed on sugar, create plaque, and damage teeth (which the Tooth Fairy definitely doesn't want), vitamins and antioxidants in fresh fruits and veggies can help fight bacteria, increase saliva flow, and actually strengthen your Tooth Fairy sidekick's teeth 🦷🧚🏻‍♀️

It seems ironic to tell someone to chew gum in order to maintain good oral care, but chewing sugarless gum after a meal can actually help to prevent cavities. Most sugarless varieties of gum contain a natural sweetener called xylitol. Because xylitol is a five-carbon sugar alcohol, it helps to reduce plaque formation and how the plaque attaches to the tooth. Xylitol has been shown to be effective as a preventive agent. The activity of chewing itself also increases saliva, which in turn flushes away food particles.
