Every year, thousands of people are injured by fireworks, many while using products they believed were safe.

Professional displays are carefully planned with trained personnel, safety zones, weather monitoring, and fire protection resources. Backyard fireworks rarely offer those same safeguards.

Emergency responders know that a single fireworks incident can quickly become a structure fire, brush fire, medical emergency, or multiple simultaneous calls.

Emergency managers should confirm coordination with local event organizers, dispatch centers, hospitals, and neighboring jurisdictions before community celebrations begin.

The safest fireworks are the ones enjoyed from a safe viewing distance.

**Public:** Attend a professional display whenever possible.

**Emergency Responders:** Review response plans for fireworks-related fires and burn injuries.

**Emergency Managers:** Verify partner coordination before large community events begin.

As we head into the Holiday Weekend, we want everyone to be safe, prepared and Have a great 4th of July!

When a fire starts, knowing what to do can change the outcome in a matter of seconds. If the fire is small and contained, using a portable fire extinguisher may help protect lives and property before the situation gets worse.

That’s why it helps to know where the extinguisher is, how to use it, and when the safer choice is to get out and call for help.

Earlier today, we had the honor of officially presenting the 2025 Business of the Year Award to ABC Fire Extinguisher Sales & Service, Inc.

It was a great opportunity to recognize a business that has been a cornerstone of the West Burlington community for more than six decades. ABC Fire’s commitment to safety, quality service, and doing right by their customers continues to make a lasting impact not only in our city, but across the region.

We are proud to celebrate their continued growth, investment in our community, and the strong family values that have guided their success through multiple generations.
