A quick reminder for anyone with dental insurance: most plans reset January 1.

That usually means your cleanings, exams, and yearly maximum start over, and whatever is left this year goes unused. We accept most PPO plans, check your benefits at no charge, and have Saturday and evening appointments if weekdays are tough.

If your dentist recommended treatment, or you're due for a cleaning, the next few months are the time to use what you've already paid for. Not sure what your plan has left? We'll check it for you at no charge before you book.

We read a version of this a lot. Something went badly once, so you stopped going, and the longer you stay away the more there is to face when you come back. The avoiding makes sense. It's also the part we're used to.

You can bring someone with you. You can ask us to stop at any point. You can ask about sedation. And you can just come in for a look at where things stand, without committing to treatment that day.

Something about us that isn't on the website: it's mango season, and Dr. Hassan comes back with a different variety every week.

So far: Pickering, Mallika, Nam Doc Mai, Coconut Cream, Super Alphonso. No verdict yet. The office is not complaining about being the testing ground.

Dentist footnote, because we can't help ourselves: mango is sweet and a little acidic. Rinse with water after, and wait about 30 minutes before brushing, since enamel is softer right after acidic fruit. Even the perfect one.

It's National Tooth Fairy Day, and the tooth fairy is not universal.

In Spain and much of Latin America the visitor is a mouse, Ratoncito Pérez, invented in Madrid in 1894. In Argentina, kids leave the tooth in a glass of water for El Ratón to drink from. In France it's la petite souris. A lot of the world went with a rodent.

Whatever your family does, the first loose tooth is a good moment for a first visit if it hasn't happened yet. We keep it short and boring, which is exactly what you want.
