One of the most common questions families have when considering orthodontic treatment is: How much do I need to put down to get started?

There’s no universal answer. Different orthodontic offices structure their payment options differently. Some may require a larger down payment, while others may offer a smaller initial payment. In certain situations, there may even be options with little or no money down.
But here’s the important part: your down payment and monthly payment usually work together.

A larger down payment will generally mean a lower monthly payment, while a smaller down payment may mean higher monthly payments.

So the goal isn’t necessarily to find the smallest possible down payment. It’s to find the right combination of down payment and monthly payment that fits comfortably within your family’s budget.

Understanding your options upfront can help you choose a payment arrangement that works for your family.

Having dental insurance doesn’t automatically mean you have coverage for orthodontic treatment. And even when your plan does include orthodontic benefits, those benefits often work differently from the dental coverage you may already be familiar with.

Many orthodontic plans have a lifetime maximum benefit, meaning there is a set maximum amount your insurance will contribute toward orthodontic treatment over your lifetime.

This becomes especially important for children who may have Phase 1 orthodontic treatment at a younger age. If part of the lifetime orthodontic benefit was already used during that treatment, there may be less available if additional treatment is needed later.

Before starting orthodontic treatment, it’s important to understand:

• Whether your dental plan includes orthodontic coverage
• How much of the lifetime maximum has already been used
• How much of the benefit is still available

Understanding your insurance benefits ahead of time can help you plan for the cost of treatment and avoid unexpected surprises.

If you have questions about your child’s orthodontic benefits, the Shullman Orthodontics team can help you understand what information to look for.

Another option for paying for orthodontic treatment is third-party financing.

With third-party financing, an outside financing company helps fund your orthodontic treatment. You apply directly with the lender, and if you’re approved, the financing company pays the orthodontic office while you make your monthly payments to the financing company.
The application process can often be completed online and may only take a few minutes, depending on the financing company and the program you qualify for.

Some financing programs may offer promotional interest-free periods, while others may charge interest. That’s why it’s important to understand the terms, interest rate, payment schedule, and promotional period before choosing a financing plan.

For families who want to spread the cost of orthodontic treatment over a longer period, third-party financing may provide another way to manage those payments.

Orthodontic financing doesn’t always mean borrowing money from a bank or an outside finance company.

Some orthodontic offices may offer in-office financing, allowing you to make payments directly to the orthodontic practice. Typically, this can involve a down payment to get started, followed by monthly payments over an agreed-upon period.

Because orthodontic treatment happens over time, payments may be spread across a significant portion of the treatment period. Depending on the orthodontic office and payment arrangement, interest-free in-office financing may also be available.

Instead of looking at the entire treatment fee and wondering how you could pay it all at once, it can be more helpful to understand:

• What do you need to pay to get started?
• What would your monthly payment be?
• How long would the payment period be?
• Is the financing interest-free?

Understanding those numbers can make the financial side of orthodontic treatment much easier to plan for.

Wellington moms asking "Is my pre-teen responsible enough for Invisalign?"

Here's what actually happens when 10-12 year olds get clear aligners:

83% wear them 20+ hours per day (higher than most adults).

Your kids aren't embarrassed by Invisalign—they think it's cool tech. They show it off to friends.

But here's the real reason I recommend Invisalign for most pre-teens: oral health protection.

With traditional braces, food gets trapped around brackets. Even diligent kids struggle to floss with wires. I've seen beautiful orthodontic results ruined by permanent white spots from poor hygiene during treatment.

Ready to see if Invisalign is right for your child? Book a consultation and I'll walk you through exactly what I'd recommend based on your child's specific case—no pressure, just honest answers.

With Invisalign, they remove trays, brush normally, and put them back in. No brackets trapping plaque. No wires to navigate around.

Plus, we monitor every patient remotely every week using Dental Monitoring. I can see compliance, hygiene, and progress in real time—not just when they come in 8 weeks later.

And for busy Wellington families? No emergency visits for broken brackets before the big game. Your child can remove trays for tournaments, recitals, or school photos.

Orthodontic treatment works differently from many other dental procedures because treatment happens over time, not all at once.
If you visit a dentist for a procedure that is completed that day, you’ll generally be expected to pay for that procedure at the time of service. Orthodontic treatment is different. Braces or Invisalign may take several months or even a couple of years to complete.
Because orthodontic care is provided over an extended period, payments can often be structured over that same period.
Instead of paying the entire treatment fee on day one, you may be able to make a down payment and divide the remaining balance into manageable monthly payments.

Understanding how orthodontic financing works can help make treatment easier to plan for without having to pay the full cost upfront.

💰 Think braces or Invisalign are automatically out of your budget?
Before you make that decision, make sure you understand all of your options.

Insurance benefits, pay-in-full discounts, financing options, and payment structures can all affect what orthodontic treatment actually costs your family.

Instead of only asking, “What’s my monthly payment?” ask about the total cost, available discounts, interest, and how long you’ll be making payments.

At Shullman Orthodontics, we’ll help you understand the full cost of treatment and the payment options available to you.

📞 Call or text (561) 868-5050 to schedule your consultation and get a clear breakdown of your orthodontic costs.

If you’re considering orthodontic treatment and have the ability to pay the full treatment fee up front, it’s worth asking whether the orthodontic office offers a pay-in-full discount.

These discounts can sometimes range from around 3% to 10% of the treatment fee, which could mean meaningful savings depending on the overall cost of treatment.

But paying in full isn’t automatically the right choice for every family. One family may prefer to take advantage of the discount and reduce the total cost, while another may prefer to keep that money available and use an interest-free monthly payment plan instead.
The important thing is to understand all of your options before deciding:

• Is there a pay-in-full discount?
• How much would you save?
• Are interest-free monthly payments available?
• Which option fits your family’s budget and priorities?

Understanding the savings and payment alternatives can make orthodontic treatment feel much more manageable.
