Welcome back to Fun Fact Friday! Did you know that your horse's dental health is directly tied to their hydration? 💧🐴

As the Texas heat starts to crank up, keeping our horses hydrated is priority #1. But if a horse has sharp enamel points, hooks, or gum inflammation, drinking cold water can actually be painful for them.

Beyond that, if they aren't able to chew their forage into small enough particles, they can't absorb the moisture and nutrients they need, which can lead to weight loss or even impaction colic in the summer months. ☀️📈

A quick annual exam ensures their mouth is comfortable enough to eat and drink exactly what they need to stay healthy all summer long!

Consistency is Key!

Take a look at this girl! She has been on a consistent yearly dental schedule with me for the last 5 years now. 🐴🦷

Because her owner prioritizes that annual check-up, her appointments are easy and stress-free. Every visit has been a simple maintenance float to keep her balanced and on track. We aren't "fixing" major issues because we never let them start in the first place!

When you stay ahead of malocclusions, your horse stays comfortable, holds their weight better, and performs more consistently. It’s much easier (and better for the horse!) to maintain a healthy mouth than to try and correct a neglected one.

🌷 Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms!! Human and equine! 🌷

Today, while we’re celebrating all the amazing women in our lives, I wanted to give a special shout-out to our hardworking broodmares and recip mares. 🐴🐴🍼

It takes a lot of energy to grow and raise a foal, and that starts with the ability to process nutrients efficiently. For our "equine moms," a healthy mouth is vital! If they can't chew their forage properly due to sharp points or imbalances, it makes it that much harder for them to maintain their own condition while supporting a baby.

Whether they are currently nursing or getting ready for the next round, don't forget to keep their dental health on your radar! A comfortable mouth means a happier, healthier mom.

Does your horse seem a little "heavy" in the bridle or sensitive when you pick up the reins? 🐴🤔

Sometimes, what we think is a training issue is actually a comfort issue! When those malocclusions, such as sharp enamel points or hooks, start to interfere with how the bit sits in the mouth, it makes clear communication almost impossible.

One of the best ways to make the bit more comfortable for the horse is creating "bit seats" and smoothing out those points so your horse can actually relax into the bridle and focus on the job at hand.
