Poor oral health may contribute to various medical conditions, including:

1. Cardiac issues - research suggests that heart disease, clogged arteries, stroke, and endocarditis might be linked to the inflammation & infections caused by oral bacteria

2. Respiratory - bacteria in the mouth can be pulled into your lungs which may cause pneumonia & other respiratory diseases

3. Diabetes - over time, high glucose levels can lead to gum disease which makes controlling diabetes even more difficult

As always, your first line of defense for healthy teeth & gums is it to brush for two minutes twice a day and floss daily. Using an antibacterial mouthwash can also help.

All three of these oral hygiene habits helps you fight plaque — the white, hard substance that sticks to your teeth and may increase the chance of decay. Dental plaque also gives stains something to hold on to. So, controlling plaque not only prevents cavity risks it also helps you fight stains.

Visiting the dentist twice a year for professional cleanings can also address the accumulation of plaque and tartar that your toothbrushing, flossing, and rinsing cannot effectively reach.

See your dentist if you notice an individual tooth - or multiple teeth - change color. Sudden discoloration can be concerning. Even the dulling of a bright smile over time can be worrisome.

Natural teeth are not 100% white and each of our teeth naturally have slight shade variations. Unsightly tooth stains vary in color (yellow, brown or even black) in one spot, covering the entire tooth, or spread over multiple teeth.

Some common culprits, categorized by color: 1. Yellow - as we age, enamel may wear down and show some of the yellow core of our teeth 2. Brown - tied to consumption of dark beverages (tea, coffee) & to***co use 3. White spots - too much exposure to fluoride from drinking water, fluoride rinses, or toothpastes 4. Gray/Black - usually tied to tooth decay or tooth pulp necrosis; exposure to minerals such as iron, manganese, or silver can create a black line on teeth 5. Purple - red wines can stain the tooth's enamel 6. Blue - long-term use of tetracycline (which is not recommended) may stain teeth blue or yellow, yellow-brown, dark-grey

After a strong cup of coffee or a spicy meal, bad breath is not so unusual. Thankfully, it is usually temporary. For some patients, however, no matter how much they brush, floss, and rinse, their bad breath persists.

If this sounds familiar, visit with your dentist! Overcoming chronic bad breath (halitosis) does not have to be an ongoing battle. There are lifestyle changes and clinical approaches that can help decrease the chances of developing bad breath.

Possible factors contributing to long-lasting bad breath are: 1. Smoking, va**ng, & other to***co use 2. Alcohol consumption 3. Postnasal drip/discharge 4. Dry mouth 5. Stomach problems (gastric reflux, Crohn's disease, ulcers) 6. Diabetes 7. Liver or kidney disease

Your dentist can recommend strategies to manage medical conditions tied to halitosis and/or recommend healthier lifestyle choices to overcome chronic bad breath.
