Unlocking REM Sleep Disruption (Koala Center for Sleep Disorders)

FAQ: How does a sleep study identify issues that happen specifically during REM sleep?

During REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, your muscles naturally relax. This muscle relaxation can lead to a total airway collapse if you have sleep apnea. By monitoring brain waves (EEG) and muscle tone (EMG), a sleep study pinpoints exactly when you are in REM and whether breathing interruptions worsen during this vital stage. Myth vs. Fact: Jaw Pain Will Go Away on Its Own (Koala Center for Sleep Disorders)

MYTH: Morning jaw pain and clicking are temporary and will fix themselves.

FACT: Persistent jaw soreness, clicking, or popping can be signs of TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) disorder, often linked to nighttime teeth grinding (bruxism) or sleep-disordered breathing. Proper assessment can prevent long-term damage.

Why You Need a Physician's Diagnosis for Oral Appliance Therapy (Koala Center for Sleep Disorders)

FAQ: Why is a physician's diagnosis required before receiving a dental appliance for sleep apnea?

Obstructive Sleep Apnea is a medical condition. A formal diagnosis from a board-certified physician ensures an accurate assessment of severity (mild, moderate, or severe). Once diagnosed, our team custom-fits a comfortable, non-invasive oral appliance to keep your airway open while you sleep.
