Most people think blood sugar only matters if you have diabetes, but it affects much more than that.

In fact blood sugar, sleep and inflammation are all connected - here’s how.

When blood sugar levels run high, sleep quality can suffer. And when you don’t get enough quality sleep, your body has a harder time regulating blood sugar the next day.

It’s a two-way street:
😴 Poor sleep can lead to higher blood sugar.
📈 Higher blood sugar can lead to poorer sleep.

Let’s break this down:

A poor night’s sleep can increase stress hormones like cortisol, making it harder for your body to regulate blood sugar.

Higher blood sugar can contribute to more inflammation throughout the body—including in your gums.

And increased inflammation can make it harder for your body to heal and fight off infection, creating a cycle that repeats itself night after night.

This is why we’re interested in more than just teeth. Sleep, nutrition, blood sugar, inflammation, and oral health are all part of the same story.

This is ALSO why you can’t always “just brush and floss better” and expect results.

When I came home with my continuous glucose monitor (CGM) yesterday, my kids had all the questions.

“What’s that on your arm?”
“Did it hurt?”
“Why did you put it on?”
“What does it do?”
“How long do you have to wear it?”
“How do you take it off?”

I had no idea that what started as curiosity on my part would turn into a great conversation with my kids about blood sugar, how our bodies use food for energy, and how different foods can affect us throughout the day.

Sometimes the best health lessons happen when kids start asking questions. They are always watching and learning. 💛

If you saw a continuous glucose monitor what would your first question be? Ask below and I’ll be sure to answer them all.

Today was CGM day!

Our team is spending the next 2 weeks wearing continuous glucose monitors to learn more about how food, sleep, stress, and everyday choices affect blood sugar.

Some of us were excited. Some were nervous. All of us were curious.

At our practice, we believe that oral health is connected to overall health, and we’re always looking for ways to learn, grow, and better serve our patients.

Follow along as we share what we discover!

I didn’t even realize mouth breathing was something to pay attention to.

It wasn’t something I was trained to look for in a meaningful way. It was just… a habit. Something kids grow out of.

Until I started seeing the same kids over and over again.

The ones who:
💤weren’t sleeping well
🍎had a hard time focusing
😫seemed more emotional than expected
🦷already had signs of crowding

And the more I paid attention, the more I noticed one small thing in common—
their mouths were often slightly open at rest.

At some point, it stopped feeling random and I dug deeper.

Because breathing affects more than we think. It plays a role in how kids sleep, how their brains recover at night, and *even how their faces develop over time.*

Now, I always step back and look at three things:
* how a child sleeps
* how they’re functioning during the day
* what I’m seeing physically
When those patterns line up, it’s usually not just a phase.

If you’ve ever felt like something is a little “off” with your child, even if you can’t explain it—it’s worth paying attention to and finding someone who can help dig deeper 🤍
