Some baby teeth stick around until a child is thirteen years old.

That's longer than most people expect, and it's part of why I've started saying we should rebrand baby teeth altogether.

Think about it this way. You wouldn't walk around with a broken foot for seven years and call it no big deal. Nobody would tell a child their crooked glasses don't matter because they're "baby eyes."

But cavities in baby teeth sometimes get waved off, because "they're just going to fall out anyway."

Except they can stick around for years, and your child lives with whatever is happening in that tooth in the meantime.

I used to think I was just a dental hygienist. I don't think that anymore.

“Do we have to stop the thumb sucking right now?”

That's usually the first question I get, often before we've even talked about whether it's actually a problem yet.

Honestly, I'll take a pacifier over a thumb all day, because let's face it, you can't cut off an arm.

What matters is why your child is doing it. Some kids just like the sensation. Others are using it because their airway needs the pressure.

A tip from a pediatric dentist is to not let your kids know your social security number, because kids tell everything.

I say that with a smile. Today I heard that mommy has cavities. We find out when a child maybe did not brush that morning, even after telling mom they did. We find out when a child has two different brushing routines, one at mom's house and one at dad's, or one with each parent.

It is fun to hear. It also shows me the dynamics of what we are dealing with and what we need to do to help their hygiene.

That is why I like talking with kids at their visits. They open up, and they let us know.

If you could change one thing about how kids experience the dentist, what would it be?

Someone asked me that recently, and my answer was simple. I would like to see kids more often than every six months.

Six months is a long time for a young child. They forget what we talked about, and some of the trust we built at the visit before slips away. Sometimes it feels like we start over each time.

If we saw kids more frequently, especially in the early years, I think that memory and comfort would build much faster.

That is a direction I would love to see us move toward, especially for the kids who need it most.

One of our hygienists began her career in Washington DC in the 1980s. She grew up in a city she calls the Black mecca, surrounded by Black professionals, so starting work in practices that had never had a hygienist who looked like her was surreal.

She was not the first Black woman in her hygiene class, but she was among the first of her era to work in those offices. Some of her patients, just one block from the White House, did not even want to see her because of her color. She calls that an eye-opening experience.

Stories like hers are a reminder of why we care so much about how every child and parent is treated from the moment they walk in. At Children's Choice Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics, that starts with the people on our team.

For some children, that's often exactly how we approach it. Some children do better with an early morning appointment, when they're freshest. Others need a private room instead of a busy open bay.

Sometimes the plan changes entirely once we're in the room. If a child needs us to sit on the floor and brush, that's what we do.
