Not every tongue tie needs to be treated right away, and that surprises a lot of parents.

A tongue tie is a piece of tissue under the tongue that can limit how far it moves. Some babies need it released quickly. Others don't need anything done for a while, if at all.

When there's no urgency, we don't rush it. Instead, we talk through what to watch for as your child grows: feeding, speech, and a few other milestones along the way.

That's usually how this decision is made in my New Carrollton and DC offices. We track it together over time and decide as we go.

"I just want the expander. Can we skip everything else?"

I get this more than you'd think, and it makes sense to a point.

My best school lunch advice, as a mom and a pediatric dentist: make it boring.

Pack the foods your kid already knows and likes during the school day. Save the more exciting stuff for after school when there's time to enjoy them properly.

Kids usually can't brush after lunch, so anything sticky or sugary just sits on their teeth for the rest of the day.

One easy trick: pack an apple. Crunchy foods like apple slices help clean the teeth a little as your child finishes eating, which helps when there's no toothbrush around.

Boring, familiar lunches end up being the easier win for both of you.

Kids read their parents before they read anything else in the room. If a parent seems tense, the child picks up on it instantly, even before I say a word. So before I turn my attention to the child, I spend a little time with the parent first.

Some of that nervousness is new, just walking in the door. Some of it goes back further, to a parent's own memories of the dentist as a kid. Either way, the parent's comfort sets the tone for the whole visit. Once a parent relaxes, I can feel the whole room shift. The appointment moves slower, calmer, easier for everyone, including your child. It's a small adjustment on my part, and it changes how the whole visit goes.

A routine therapy session at our office once turned into a same week referral that changed how quickly a family could get care.

Our myofunctional therapist specializes in how the muscles of the mouth, tongue, and face work together during breathing, swallowing, and speech. She noticed something during a session that pointed to a bigger issue and flagged it right away.

We referred the family to a trusted ENT partner, and the procedure that followed helped resolve what she'd caught. Afterward, we sent a simple thank you note for taking such good care of our patient.

The photo you're about to see took three tries and one very serious talk about who could keep a straight face longer.

Dr. Jonelle Anamelechi and Dr. Su Lee spent an afternoon behind the camera, trading directions and a little competitive energy, all set to a song neither of them could stop mouthing along to.

The team laughed through most of it. That part didn't make the final cut.

What did make it: a black and white portrait that looks nothing like the chaos it took to get there.
