How Do I Know If My Tooth Is Cracked?

Cracked teeth show a variety of symptoms, including erratic pain when chewing, possibly with the release of biting pressure, or pain when your tooth is exposed to temperature extremes. In many cases, the pain may come and go, and your dentist may have difficulty locating which tooth is causing the discomfort.

What Does an Endodontist Do Besides Root Canals?

While a dentist may perform one or two root canals a week, an endodontist may perform over 25 root canals every week. Although root canals are a common procedure at an endodontist's office, they span beyond these treatments. Endodontists also perform intentional replantations, repairing injured roots, or removing roots. In general, they specialize in any ailment associated with the tissues inside of the teeth. Dentists often work with endodontists as specialized treatment will give you the best outcome, which will result in faster heal times, better dental formations, and the highest standard of care for all of your dental needs.

Similar to how a cardiologist only deals with disorders of the heart, an endodontist only works with the pulp, or inside tissues, of the teeth. With this specialization, it allows for more accurate diagnostics and overall better results with treatment. While regular dentists are qualified to perform simple root canals, endodontists can provide patients with more treatment options that can restore your teeth for life. Procedures that endodontists can perform but generalized dentists cannot include:

- Cracked teeth treatment.
- Diagnosis and treatment of complex root problems.
- Tooth replacements.
- Consultations for facial trauma patients.
- Surgical removal of roots.

How Long Does It Take to Recover From a Root Canal?

In recent years, many things have changed in the world of dentistry, including in the treatment of root canals. With modern advancements, pain is not as severe and excruciating. Endodontists use pain-relieving measures to ensure that patients can quickly recover afterward and are comfortable during the procedure.

You are likely to experience some pain and discomfort once the local anesthesia used begins to wear off. Often as a result of the cleaning process, this comes in the form of soreness and sensitivity. However, this pain should only persist for a few days after your procedure. To help you cope with the pain, your dentist will prescribe over-the-counter pain medications for relieving the pain and discomfort in the initial days after treatment.

Overall, it should only take you one to three days to recover from a root canal. Any pain that goes beyond this period could indicate a problem. If you are experiencing pain or discomfort that lasts for more than three days, contact your dentistry care team right away.

What Is the Strongest Antibiotic for Tooth Abscess?

The type of bacteria causing the infection will determine what type of antibiotic you'll need. Different types of antibiotics have different ways of attacking bacteria. Your dentist will choose an antibiotic that can successfully eliminate your infection. Antibiotics such as amoxicillin and penicillin are commonly used to help treat tooth infections. Be sure to tell your dentist if you're allergic to penicillin (if you do not know, ask your doctor). An alternative to penicillin is erythromycin and can be prescribed in its place. Information about dosage, frequency and how to take the medication will be given to you by your local pharmacist. However, you will typically need to take antibiotics for about a week and be sure to use the entire prescription to ensure the infection is completely gone.

What happens during an endodontic treatment?

This kind of treatment might be required if an initial root canal didn't remove all of a tooth's unhealthy tissue, if there was a previously undetected anomaly in the canal, or if a prior procedure didn't properly seal a tooth.

The first step during this treatment is to inspect a patient's root canal. To do so, a professional might have to remove a crown, post, or any core material. Once the professional has access to the canal, he or she will clean it to prevent any further complications. The patient will return another day to have a new crown placed in order to protect the tooth.

When Is an Endodontic Treatment Necessary?

Sometimes a procedure doesn't remove all of the unhealthy tissue in a tooth, or other times a procedure didn't properly seal the tooth. In other instances, there is a previously undetected anomaly in the canal. In these circumstances, an endodontic treatment might be necessary. In this procedure, the professional will inspect and clean the root canal to prevent any complications from occurring. The patient will be left with a healthy canal and a healthy tooth.

What can you tell me about root canals?

The first thing you should know about root canals is that if you require one, you'll be in good hands when you go see an endodontist. These professionals are experts in root canals, and you'll find them here at Ideal Endodontics.

You should also know that sometimes a root canal is necessary because an unhealthy tooth could become severely damaged if it isn't treated. When a patient has a cracked or chipped tooth, tooth decay, or a tooth that has undergone repeated procedures, then inside that tooth, the soft tissue can become infected or inflamed. If this isn't treated, the tooth can develop an abscess, which is severe tooth damage. To prevent this from happening, a root canal is necessary. The root canal saves the tooth by removing the unhealthy tissue to prevent further complications. After, the tooth will receive the nourishment it needs from healthier, surrounding tissue.

There are some signs you can check for to see if you might need a root canal. Some of these signs include tooth pain, sensitivity, tenderness, or discoloration. You might also be experiencing gum pain or lymph node tenderness. If you have any of these issues, then get in touch with us here at Ideal Endodontics.

Should I go to an endodontist for a root canal?

Most people who experience tooth pain start with a visit to their general dentist, which is a good idea. A general dentist is well-suited to treat the most common causes of toothaches such as cavities and gum disease. However, extreme sensitivity to hot and cold, lingering pain, a dull ache in the jaw or discomfort while chewing can all be indicative of an endodontic problem. An endodontist has a specialized focus and training which means that these specialists are highly skilled at diagnosing dental pain and treating associated disorders.

When you visit an endodontist, they will review your dental history and perform a thorough exam. Typically, diagnostic imaging and testing will be used to help to determine the exact problem. So you can understand how treatment can relieve your pain and save your tooth, after making a diagnosis, your endodontist will discuss the benefits, options, and risks involved. If you agree to move forward with endodontic treatment, it may start right away and could even finish in one appointment.

Root Fractures

A traumatic injury to the tooth may also result in a horizontal root fracture. The location of the fracture determines the long-term health of the tooth. If the fracture is close to the root tip, the chances for success are much better. However, the closer the fracture is to the gum line, the poorer the long-term success rate. Sometimes, stabilization with a splint is required for a period of time.

Why do I need another endodontic procedure?

As occasionally happens with any dental or medical procedure, a tooth may not heal as expected after initial treatment for a variety of reasons:

Narrow or curved canals were not treated during the initial procedure.

- Complicated canal anatomy went undetected in the first procedure.
- The placement of the crown or other restoration was delayed following the endodontic treatment.
- The restoration did not prevent salivary contamination to the inside of the tooth.

In other cases, a new problem can jeopardize a tooth that was successfully treated. For example, new decay can expose the root canal filling material to bacteria, causing a new infection in the tooth.

- A loose, cracked or broken crown or filling can expose the tooth to new infection.
- A tooth sustains a fracture.
