From Treatment Coordinator to Marketing Director, a lot has changed in eight years, but getting to grow alongside this team and be part of this little corner of DC has meant more to me than I can put into an Instagram caption.

Very grateful for the people, the memories, the opportunities, and everything I’ve learned along the way.

Sometimes, making a little space can make a big difference. 🦷

IPR creates small amounts of space between crowded teeth, allowing us to align them without unnecessarily flaring them forward. This can help keep teeth better positioned within the supporting bone and gums, with the goal of supporting long-term gum health and reducing the risk of recession that could require a gum graft later.

What’s an expander... and why does my child need one?

One of the most common questions we get from parents.

An expander is a custom orthodontic appliance that gently widens the upper jaw while a child’s natural growth is still working in our favor. By creating more space early, we can help guide permanent teeth into better positions and reduce crowding.

Think of it like this:

🚗 Permanent teeth = cars
🅿️ The mouth = a parking garage

Every “car” needs its own parking space. An expander helps create those spaces before all of the permanent teeth arrive.

How does it work?

• We’ll tell you exactly how many turns to complete at home.
• Turns are typically done once each evening before bed.
• Active expansion usually lasts about 3 months, followed by a holding appliance to maintain the results while everything stabilizes.

Parent tip:
The easiest way to see the keyhole is to have your child lean their head back over your lap or the edge of the couch or bed. This makes turns much easier for everyone involved.

This weekend was full of milestones worth celebrating, including our clinical technician Sylvia’s 1️⃣0️⃣ year work anniversary at Bird Smiles! 💙🎉

For the past 10 years, Sylvia has been an important part of our team and the care we provide our patients. Her dedication, consistency and commitment have been part of so many smiles over the years, and we’re so lucky to work alongside such a wonderful woman and colleague. 🫶💃

A full-circle moment that’s pretty special. 💙

Our summer intern has been a Bird Smiles patient for years, so while she was spending a few weeks with us behind the scenes, we also completed her routine retainer check.

It’s a small appointment with a big reminder: the day your braces come off isn’t the end of your orthodontic journey. Wearing your retainer is what helps keep your smile looking its best for years to come.

Having one of our former patients choose to come back and spend part of her summer with us was such a compliment.

Thank you for spending part of your summer with us. We loved having you as part of the Bird Smiles team! 🫶
