Dentistry and sleep do not sound like they belong in the same sentence, but they absolutely do. Airway health is one of the most overlooked drivers of poor sleep, and there are real options that don't always involve a machine on your nightstand. Worth a conversation?

Pro-tip: These treatments are often covered under your MEDICAL insurance!

Real talk: that morning jaw ache is not just stress. It is often your teeth grinding at night without you knowing and over time it quietly wears them down. The good news? It is one of the easiest things to address. We should talk. slatedentaldc.com

Join us in celebrating Sylva's 2-year work anniversary with our team! 🎉

Sylva, our amazing Patient Care Coordinator, celebrated this milestone on the 17th, and we couldn't be happier to have them. A Northern California native who moved here from Minnesota five years ago, Sylva is truly dedicated to making your appointments as seamless and stress-free as possible. Their favorite part of the job? Interacting with all of you!

When Sylva's not at the office ensuring your oral health goals are met, they're probably co-hosting lively bingo and board game nights, organizing delicious potlucks, or planning an exciting murder mystery dinner party! They also love exploring the DMV with friends and, of course, showering local cats and dogs with affection. 🐾

Thank you, Sylva, for two wonderful years of hard work, smiles, and dedication!

Monday morning emergencies!... They tend to bring some of the most interesting cases.

This patient's crown had fractured revealing a failing cast metal post and core, as well as a couple missing fillings. I never like to let a patient leave the office without a front tooth, so we decided to restore this immediately after diagnosing.

The cast post and core, although leaking in the coronal aspect, was actually in good shape. The core was prepared into a "pseudo-post", air abraded, treated with alloy primer, and utilized to retain a new bonded core.

My goal for replacing the core was to block out the dark substrate color. The grayish color of the metal can have a significant influence on the overall porcelain shade. Since this is the third time this patient has had this crown placed, he really would like the color to match the adjacent tooth, #8.

I think we've teed ourselves up for an excellent result, and now it's time for our ceramist to work his magic doing one of the most challenging things in dentistry... Matching the front two teeth. 🧙‍♂️

Stay tuned for the final result!

After years in a nursing home, this 73-year-old patient finally had access to care. But with limited mobility and difficulty coordinating visits, he needed a solution that would keep appointments to a minimum—while keeping his own teeth.

Many would extract. But for those who value function, preserving natural teeth (when possible) is always the best approach.

With careful restorative work, these teeth can last for decades—giving him the ability to eat, speak, and smile naturally.

Would you have expected these teeth to be saved? Let me know in the comments! 👇

Did you know your teeth and sinuses are often connected?

This patient came to our office with moderate biting pressure sensitivity on her upper right teeth. After a few simple in-office tests and an X-ray, we confirmed that her maxillary molar had "died," meaning the tissues inside had turned necrotic.

Once a tooth dies, the body can’t clean the inside on its own. To prevent further infection, we partnered with one of our trusted local endodontists to perform root canal therapy on tooth #2, sterilizing and sealing the inner chamber.

Notice how the abscess around the tooth extended into the maxillary sinus, an air-filled cavity that should be clear but was instead filled with inflamed, infected tissue.

Sometimes, chronic sinus congestion can actually stem from a dental infection. If you’re experiencing recurring sinus issues, it might be worth checking in with your dentist!

It's always a challenge in when teeth fracture at the gum line. Many dentists will often suggest removal of the tooth and opt for the more "predictable" implant therapy.

I believe that we can better serve this patient by utilizing very strict restorative protocols to save her tooth. It's important to educate patient that even if the treatment fails 10-20-30 years down the road, she will have preserved the bone in this potential future implant site for that same period of time.

We are thrilled with this final esthetic result and tissue health. Most importantly, so is the patient!
