Flossing is an essential part of oral hygiene, helping to remove plaque and food particles from between your teeth where a toothbrush can’t reach. Here are some tips to make sure you’re flossing effectively:

1. Use Enough Floss: Cut a piece of floss about 18 inches long. This gives you plenty of space to use a fresh section for each tooth.

2. Gentle Technique: Hold the floss tightly between your thumbs and forefingers. Gently slide it between your teeth, curving it into a “C” shape around each tooth. Avoid snapping or forcing the floss.

3. Floss Between Every Tooth: Make sure to floss between all your teeth, including the back teeth. Don’t skip any spaces!

4. Clean Below the Gumline: When flossing, gently slide the floss under the gumline (but don’t force it). This helps to remove plaque and prevent gum disease.

5. Use Clean Sections: After flossing each tooth, move the floss to a clean section to avoid transferring plaque and bacteria back into your mouth.

6. Floss Regularly: Aim to floss at least once a day, preferably before brushing. This helps to remove debris and plaque buildup before brushing cleans the rest of your teeth.

7. Don’t Forget the Back Teeth: The last molars are often neglected, but it’s just as important to clean these spaces.

8. Use Floss Picks if Necessary: If you find traditional floss challenging to use, floss picks or soft-threaded flossers might be a more comfortable alternative.

9. Be Consistent: Make flossing part of your daily routine to improve overall oral health and prevent cavities and gum disease.

If you’re unsure about your technique, we can offer more personalized tips during your next appointment. 🦷

🦷 Celebrating National Hygienist Week with our incredible hygienist, Justine! We asked Justine to share what motivated her to become a hygienist and what her favorite part of the position is. Check out her answers below ⬇️

“Being able to provide preventive care and putting a halt to gum inflammation and periodontitis is what motivated me to become a hygienist.

My favorite thing about being a hygienist is being able to take care of my patients while also building interpersonal relationships with them.”

From preventing gum inflammation to building lasting bonds with her patients, Justine’s passion shines through every smile she cares for. 💙
