"If you don't see it, it doesn't mean it does not exist."I often get asked about the need for X-rays for patients. A complete series of X-rays (FMX) is necessary for new patients to detect cavities, bone infection, bone loss, and other hidden conditions. These are usually taken every 5 years. For established patients, a small set of X-rays (4 Bws, 2 PA) should be taken annually to check for cavities and bone levels. The frequency of the small set depends on the individual's risk of cavities, ranging from every 6 months to up to 2 years. Below is an example of suspected cavities due to slight color changes in the tooth enamel, which were confirmed by an X-ray.
