Wow,,, where do I start? The last week has been dizzying as well as educational at best. The rest of it was eye opening, appalling and absolutely dismal and yet I couldn't take my eyes off of what I found. To be honest, it actually kept me up at night a few times. I am talking about your online reviews and services like Yelp, Home Advisor... and even Google Reviews.
My research started out innocently enough and I was just gathering information. Then I got into an ugly truth about certain interview sites and what they were doing to their paid customers. I learned about a new tern called Cyber Squatting. where the review site will create business properties on businesses without their consent. From there they more or less hold them hostage until they pay. Worse, even when you do pay the online service will only publish your worst reviews until you pay more. This is extortion and yet these companies are getting away with it.
Then I read about how they will send their own employees over to leave reviews. Some of these guys are getting caught and it is a more elaborate form of click fraud. There is an investigation on this right now in North Carolina. This is dirty business and I was surprised to see how many of these companies are not only doing it but skating away with thousands of dollars every month from local business leaving them pressured and confused on how to fight back.
You can do your own research on this and when you do you will be as surprised as I was. There is something you can do about it but you got to do your homework. This is a rampant problem and it has been doing on in the Google space for the last 10 years at least. People have taken it upon themselves to claim businesses online and then creating Google my Business pages and then putting in the wrong phone numbers. From there they step in as the business owner and demand payment. There has been some protection efforts made from Google but a lot more needs to be done.
Right now these services are collecting up to $888 million dollars a year from their online review programs. Most business owners will pay it because they are pretty much given up on finding a solution to it.
