Thumb sucking is very common in babies, but the longer the habit continues, the more opportunity it has to affect the developing teeth and jaws.

Over time, persistent thumb sucking can contribute to changes in the bite, tooth position, and jaw development. In some children, those changes can make orthodontic treatment more complicated later on.

The earlier the habit stops, the better. By around age 1, the natural need for sucking has decreased significantly, and what started as a soothing reflex can become more of a comfort habit.

One tip for newborns: if you notice your baby starting to favor their thumb, try offering a PACIFIER instead. A pacifier is usually much easier to take away when the time comes. A thumb, unfortunately, is always available. 😅

No need to panic if your toddler still sucks their thumb, but it’s worth keeping an eye on how often they do it and discussing it with your pediatric dentist as they get older.

You can hear it from the hallway and it sounds awful.

Teeth grinding is relatively common in children. During the day, it may happen while the jaws and teeth are changing or simply as a form of sensory input.

Grinding during sleep is a little different. It can sometimes be a clue to what’s happening with a child’s breathing while they sleep, and the cause is often multifactorial rather than simply “stress.”

It’s worth mentioning to your dentist, especially if you also notice worn or chipped teeth, restless sleep, or snoring.

Why I only treat kids.

Adults usually come in knowing what to expect. Kids don’t, and one bad dental experience can stick with someone for decades.

I’ve met plenty of adults who avoid the dentist entirely because of something that happened when they were six.

I chose pediatrics because the visit where a scared six-year-old walks out thinking, “Okay… the dentist is actually fine,” is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.

That’s the whole job.

The teeth are the easy part.

Play sports? Protect that smile. 🦷🏀⚽️⚾️

Any sport involving a ball, stick, bike, board, or the chance of a fall or collision, can come with a risk of dental and facial injury.

A properly fitting mouthguard can help protect the teeth, lips, cheeks, and jaw when accidents happen.

And it’s not just for football. Basketball, soccer, baseball, hockey, lacrosse, skateboarding, biking and many other activities can put teeth at risk.

Not sure what type of mouthguard is best for your child? Ask us at their next visit.

A lot of dental instruments look much scarier than they actually are.

That’s why we give them names kids can understand:

The Tooth Counter helps us look around and count teeth.
Mr. Thirsty drinks the extra water.
The Tickle Brush polishes teeth. It buzzes and tickles.
The Camera takes a picture of your teeth so we can see what’s happening between them.

Using simple, familiar words can make the whole visit feel a little less intimidating and a lot more predictable.

SAVE this before you need it.

When something happens to your child’s tooth, it can be hard to know what needs attention right away and what can safely wait until morning.

Call right away for:
• A knocked-out permanent tooth
• A large tooth fracture, roughly 1/3 of the tooth or more
• An injury with heavy or uncontrolled bleeding

Usually okay to call in the morning for:
• A small chip with no pain
• A minor crack
• A toothache that improves with an age-appropriate children’s pain reliever

Two important things parents should know:

A knocked-out PERMANENT tooth should be handled by the crown only. Never touch or scrub the root. If possible, place it in milk and get to a dentist or emergency dental provider immediately. MINUTES MATTER.

A knocked-out BABY tooth should NOT be put back in. Re-inserting it can damage the permanent tooth developing underneath.

When you’re unsure, call. We would much rather help you figure out the next step than have you wondering whether something can wait.

Save this post and send it to another parent who might need it one day.

Insurance can be confusing, especially when you’re trying to figure out whether a provider takes your plan. Here’s a simple breakdown of HMO vs. PPO:

PPO plans are generally more flexible. In many cases, you can see both in-network and out-of-network providers and still use your benefits.

HMO plans are typically more restrictive. You generally need to stay within your plan’s network to use your benefits, and some plans may also require referrals for certain specialists.

At Wall Pediatric Dentistry, we are a PPO-friendly office. That means we can submit claims to your insurance company on your behalf, and your plan pays us directly for its covered portion. You are responsible for your remaining share based on your specific benefits.

Being PPO-friendly/ in-network does NOT mean every visit is free. Your out-of-pocket cost depends on your individual plan, deductible, coverage percentages, and whether services are considered preventive or restorative. Preventive care may be covered at or near 100% on most plans, while other treatment may have a larger patient portion.

Not sure if you can use your insurance with us?
Give us a call and have your insurance information handy. We’ll be happy to look into your benefits before your visit so you have a clearer idea of what to expect.

Also, if you are in open enrollment and deciding between a few different plans, call us and we can guide you through the process.

Put the string down.
Let them wiggle it.

Most baby teeth come out on their own schedule, which is
frequently at the dinner table, in front of everyone.
A tooth that's ready, comes out with almost no effort.

Don't yank it. String-and-doorknob is how you get a torn gum and
a kid who won't let you near the next one.
Bleeding after? Normal. Gauze, gentle pressure, ten minutes.

**** Call us if it's loose from an injury rather than from age. That's a different situation and worth a look.
