October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to reflect on the impact of this disease and the importance of early detection. Breast cancer remains one of the most common cancers among women, and while many believe family history is the primary risk factor, the reality is that most women diagnosed, nearly 3 out of 4, do not have a family history. This makes routine screenings essential for everyone, not just those considered high risk.

In Hawaiʻi, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women, with an average of 1,287 women diagnosed each year. Yet about one in four Hawaiʻi women age 40 and older had not received a mammogram within the previous two years as of 2024.

Early detection of breast cancer saves lives and mammograms remain the most effective screening tool. Mammograms can identify cancers long before symptoms appear. For women age 40 and older, screening mammograms once a year are strongly recommended.

This October, we encourage you to take time for your health and schedule a mammogram. It is fast, important, and it could save your life. WCCHC is offering a small gift of appreciation to every patient who receives a mammogram with us this month.

Become part of the 13th Waiʻanae cohort of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program for Fall 2027 enrollment, offered through a partnership between Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center and the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo School of Nursing.

This community-based program makes higher education in nursing accessible right here in West Oʻahu, empowering students to:

• Train close to home while earning a fully accredited BSN degree.
• Gain hands-on experience at Hawaiʻi’s oldest community health center.
• Learn from experienced nurses and faculty mentors dedicated to student success.
• Serve the community you love, caring for individuals and families across generations.

Walk-in Care Coming to Waipahu! 🏥

We are pleased to announce the addition of a walk-in clinic at WCCHC’s Waipahu Family Health Center, located at The Filipino Community Center in Hawai’i.

Beginning Monday, October 5, patients can access convenient care close to home without an appointment.

Services include care for colds, sore throats, and coughs; family planning, including birth control and pregnancy testing; basic immunizations; prescription renewals; and lab and strep testing.

🗓️ Monday and Wednesday clinics begin October 5.
🗓️ Tuesday and Friday clinics begin October 13.
⏰ Hours: 8–10 a.m. | Last patient seen at 9:45 a.m.

Mahalo to Kauaʻi Mayor Derek Kawakami, Representative Darius Kila, and Representative Cory Chun for visiting Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center on August 31.

The visit included a tour of WCCHC’s Waiʻanae campus, including the Emergency Department and Dental Department, and an overview of the Health Center’s work providing comprehensive healthcare and support services to communities across the Waiʻanae Coast and West Oʻahu.

The group also discussed issues affecting patients and families, including upcoming changes to Medicaid and SNAP, access to healthcare, and food security. The tour included ʻElepaio Social Services and its food distribution efforts, which help connect families with food and other community resources.

Mahalo Mayor Kawakami, Representative Kila, and Representative Chun for taking the time to visit, talk story with WCCHC staff, and learn more about the work happening across the Health Center and the communities it serves.

Applications are open for the Spring 2027 Medical Assistant cohort with Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center and the National Institute for Medical Assistant Advancement (NIMAA) (NIMAA ). The eight-month program combines online coursework with hands-on learning at our health center.
