As children we are all told, avoid too many sugary foods and drinks to ensure you keep your teeth for as long as you can!
However, there are a few other reasons that you may lose your teeth as you get older. We will explore in this article.
Reason 1: Acid levels in food
Each time we eat, the acid levels in your mouth increase drastically. It takes approximately an hour for these levels to once again return to normal.
It is at peak acidity that our teeth become most vulnerable to tooth decay as the acid wears away the enamel that protects our teeth. Our top tip would be to limit any sweet and sugary snacks to just one hit per day rather than snacking on such snacks throughout the course of the day.
By doing this you are limiting a spike in acids to just once rather than on numerous occasions which would be more favorable on your teeth.
Reason 2: Playing sports
You can keep the cleanest diet as an elite sportsman, but this still might not stop you from getting your teeth knocked out when competing.
In order to minimize the risk of losing any teeth, we suggest the use of a mouth guard. This will help protect your teeth if they were to come into contact with a high-impact collision. However, if the damage is done and a tooth does get knocked out, be sure to keep hold of it and store it in milk until you can get seen by a dentist to hopefully have it put back in.
Reason 3: Tooth grinding
This can be an entirely subconscious activity, but at some point in our lives, we may become prone to grinding our teeth.
As time passes, our teeth will begin to wear away and in turn put unnecessary strain on the surrounding tissue, gum and even bone. As a result of this, your teeth will begin to come loose and ultimately fall out.
The causes of grinding can vary, but in most cases can be caused by anxiety. Alternatively, an abnormal bite or crooked smile can be a contributing factor to tooth wear. We recommend that you book in to see a dentist as soon as you notice this habit developing, we can best advise on preventive methods and solutions.
Reason 4: Smoking
Similarly to having a bad diet, smoking can lead to periodontal disease leading to tooth loss.
Periodontal disease is the inflammation around the tooth, which can lead to a weakening of the bone and other supporting structures that hold the teeth in place.
Reason 5: Poor oral hygiene
The very least you can do to ensure you maintain healthy teeth is clean your teeth as advised by your dentist or hygienist.
We 100% recommend booking in to see your hygienist alongside your dentist. Your hygienist is a dental professional, highly trained in looking after your teeth and gums.
The risk of getting gum disease can be reduced by visiting the hygienist, and gum disease can be caught in the early stages as well as offering advice on the best practice to look after your teeth and mouth.
