What Are Impacted Canines?

No, we're not talking about dogs. 😄

Canine teeth are the pointed teeth near the front of your smile, and they're some of the most important teeth in your mouth. They help guide your bite, support your facial structure, and play a major role in creating a healthy, attractive smile.

Sometimes, however, these teeth get "stuck" beneath the gums and never fully erupt. This is known as an impacted canine.

Signs you may have an impacted canine include:
🦷 A missing adult tooth
🦷 Persistent baby teeth
🦷 Crowding or shifting teeth
🦷 A tooth that simply never came in

Here's an interesting fact: Canines are the second most commonly impacted teeth after wisdom teeth, affecting approximately 2-3% of the population.

Think of an impacted canine like a talented employee who never shows up to work. The rest of the team (your other teeth) has to compensate, and eventually problems start to develop. 😅

The good news? With proper diagnosis and treatment, impacted canines can often be guided into their proper position, helping preserve both function and appearance.

☀️🎓 Parents of teenagers: this is your reminder.

Summer is one of the best times to schedule wisdom teeth removal.

Why?

Because your teen is finally free from:

-Homework
-Sports schedules
-Exams and school stress

Which means they have plenty of time to recover comfortably before the next school year—or before heading off to college.

In fact, wisdom teeth are often easier to remove during the teen years and early twenties, when the roots are less developed and recovery tends to be faster.

At North Coast Oral Surgery, Dr. Nate Turley and our team make the process smooth, comfortable, and as stress-free as possible, so your teen can get back to summer fun in no time.

📞 Don't wait until the week before college move-in day. Schedule a consultation today: 760-941-5051

🦷 What Are Implant-Supported Dentures?

Think of them as dentures that finally got a serious upgrade. 🚀

Traditional dentures sit on top of your gums and can sometimes slip, shift, or move when you're eating or talking.

Implant-supported dentures are different.

A few dental implants are placed into your jawbone, and your denture securely attaches to those implants. The result?

✅ More stability when eating
✅ More confidence when speaking
✅ No denture adhesive needed
✅ A more natural feel and appearance
✅ Better jawbone preservation over time

It's a little like the difference between a tent sitting on the ground and a house anchored to a foundation. One is stable. One is hoping the wind doesn't pick up. 😅

At North Coast Oral Surgery, Dr. Nate Turley helps patients throughout North San Diego County discover whether implant-supported dentures are the right solution for restoring their smile and quality of life.

Rebuilding the Foundation: The Science of Bone Grafting 🧪
When you hear the term "bone graft," it might sound like something out of a futuristic sci-fi movie. But in reality, it is one of the most routine, highly successful, and essential procedures we perform to ensure your dental implants last a lifetime.

Here is an mind-blowing fact you might not know about your own body:

💡 Did you know? > Your jawbone is a "use it or lose it" structure. Within just the first year of losing a single tooth, the surrounding jawbone can lose up to 25% of its width and volume through a natural process called resorption.

Without the physical stimulation of a tooth root (or an implant) from daily chewing, your body decides it doesn't need that bone anymore and starts to dissolve it.

✨ The Good News: Your Body is an Expert Builder
A bone graft acts as a temporary "scaffold." We place a tiny amount of specialized material into the area where the bone has thinned out.

Instead of just sitting there, this material sends a signal to your body's natural healing response. Over a few months, your body absorbs the scaffolding and replaces it entirely with your own brand-new, healthy bone. It’s a biological teamwork win!

🏥 Why Choose a Specialist for Your Graft?
Because bone grafting relies heavily on 3D biology and precise engineering, it requires advanced training. At North Coast Oral Surgery, we use state-of-the-art technology to map out your jaw in three dimensions, ensuring your graft creates the ultimate, rock-solid foundation for a beautiful new smile.

Don't let bone loss stand between you and a confident smile!

🦷 To Graft or Not to Graft? That is the Implant Question! 🤔
When you're getting ready for a dental implant, the phrase "bone grafting" can sound a little intimidating. It conjures up images of intense orthopedic surgeries and weeks of recovery.

But is it always necessary?

The short answer: No, not always! But it is incredibly common, and for a very good reason.

🧱 The House & Foundation Analogy
Think of a dental implant like building a house. The implant is the house, and your jawbone is the foundation.

If you try to build a heavy brick house on a weak, shifting sand dune, what happens? It collapses.

A dental implant needs a strong, dense foundation of bone to lock into so it can withstand years of chewing.

If you’ve been missing a tooth for a while, or if an infection damaged the area, your jawbone naturally starts to shrink or "resorb." A bone graft simply rebuilds that foundation so your implant has a lifetime guarantee of support.

-->When Can You Skip the Graft?
You might be able to fast-track straight to the implant if:

You have great bone density: You naturally have a thick, strong jawbone.

Immediate placement: The tooth was just extracted, and the surrounding bone is perfectly intact and healthy.

-->Why See a Specialist First?
Every mouth is unique. At North Coast Oral Surgery, we use advanced 3D imaging to look past the surface and see exactly what your jawbone looks like. If you need a graft, we use minimally invasive techniques to ensure it’s a comfortable, smooth process. (And yes, we'll probably be wearing our comfortable office tees while we do it! 😉)

Don't guess about your smile's foundation—let the specialists take a look.
