The Smile Center, Virginia Beach Welcome to The Smile Center, Virginia Beach! We offer a kinder, gentler approach to dentistry! Come Our practice offers a different approach to dentistry.

We believe that coming to the dentist does not have to be a difficult experience. Our doctors place a strong emphasis on patient comfort, and are always receptive to the patients wants or needs. There are two doctors here at The Smile Center. Dr Scott Parr performs general dentistry on patients of all ages. He also practices cosmetic dentistry, and implant placement. Dr Tara Frey practices general dentistry on all ages. She also offers orthodontic treatment, including Invisalign. Both doctors bring something unique to the practice, and are always looking for ways to update their education, and upgrade the office. They like to stay up to date on the latest dental technology. We are also a Center for Dental Medicine, which means that we recognize the link between your oral and your physical health. Staying up to date on your oral hygiene could actually save your life! Because comfort is so important to us, we offer several amenities to our patients to help make their visit a more enjoyable experience. When you book an appointment with us, you will be reserving your own private room for the duration of your stay. Each room is equipped with a flat screen television, where the patient can watch the channel of their choice. We also have headphones in every room, so patients can hook them up to the TV, and tune out any noises if they prefer. We have big fuzzy blankets so our patients can snuggle up and relax. Many of our patients doze off in the chair! We work hard to try to rehabilitate our dental phobic patients. We realize that trust is earned, and trust is a big part of overcoming your fears. We do offer nitrous oxide, as well as va**um if it is needed, and can even do your treatment under sedation if you prefer. Our staff is always friendly and accomodating. Most of them have been with the practice many years and we feel more like a family than co-workers. If you are ready for a new dental experience, give us a call at 757-473-8482. We are always accepting new patients, and would love to have you!

What should a GP ask when a child presents with behavioural or attention problems?

Before assuming that every behavioural problem is purely behavioural, I think there is one simple area that deserves more attention:

Sleep.

Children with sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) can present with symptoms including:

• Inattention
• Hyperactivity
• Irritability
• Poor concentration
• Emotional dysregulation
• Learning difficulties
• Behavioural problems

These symptoms can overlap considerably with other childhood conditions.

So when I see a child with significant behavioural or attention difficulties, I think there are some simple questions worth asking.

1. Does the child regularly snore?

Not just occasionally during a cold.

Regular or habitual snoring deserves attention.

2. Does the child breathe through their mouth?

Especially during sleep.

Persistent mouth breathing may indicate nasal obstruction.

3. Is the child’s sleep restless?

Do they move constantly, change position frequently or sleep with their neck extended?

4. Has anyone noticed breathing difficulties during sleep?

Pauses, gasping, choking or obvious increased work of breathing are important clues.

5. Does the child have chronic nasal obstruction?

Think about:

allergic rhinitis + enlarged adenoids + turbinate hypertrophy + chronic congestion.

6. Does the child have significant daytime symptoms?

Poor concentration, hyperactivity, irritability, fatigue, morning headaches or declining school performance can all be relevant.

None of these questions diagnoses sleep-disordered breathing.

But they can identify children who deserve a more detailed assessment.

And importantly, I don’t think this should become:

“Every child with ADHD needs a sleep study.”

That’s not the message.

The message is:

Don’t forget sleep when assessing behaviour.

A child can have ADHD.

A child can have sleep-disordered breathing.

And a child can have both.

The important thing is to recognise when sleep may be contributing to the clinical picture.
