Knowledge and education have always held high value in my life. Particularly because of the positive impact that it has had on my family's life journey from Africa/India to England and finally to the United States. That is why it struck me, as my husband and I ventured into parenthood and while I watched my body transform multiple times through 2 full pregnancies and 1 miscarriage, I felt so unprepared for how our lives would change after our first baby.
Well meaning friends and family would offer advice like 'sleep when the baby sleeps', but I found particularly the first 12 weeks after my first baby was born were the most challenging emotionally, physically, mentally and socially and that advice was rather unrealistic. I started seeking out other women who were going through the same part of life to figure out whether what I was feeling was ok or whether what was happening to my body was normal.
Through my work creating and managing Viera Pediatric Dentistry I have had the incredible fortune of meeting and working with other female healthcare providers who are also mothers. We would speak informally about the challenges of running offices while "momming" but I kept hearing the phrase "if only there was a class about ......". I also kept fielding questions from new parents coming in for their baby's tongue/lip tie assessments that were outside of my scope of care. That's where the idea of The Hive was born.
I was able to assemble my dream team of female providers to speak upon their specialty specifically geared towards new parents trying their best to prepare for bringing a mother and baby home. This would allow partners/family to gain insight on how to assess for red flags for post partum depression/anxiety and know where to seek help locally, assist and support mothers as they start a breastfeeding or bottle feeding journey, prepare for what baby's first year would be like, amongst many other topics relevant to the 4th Trimester. I am hopeful that this venture will do what it is meant do - help empower families to feel ready to bring a baby and mother home and teach them how to support both during one of the most challenging life transitions.
I hope that you can support this endeavor by "liking" The Hive: A 4th Trimester Collectiveon Facebook and Instagram and sharing it with your friends. I appreciate your support thus far and am grateful for the many patient families and friends who have inspired this next chapter. Thank you!
