What does it mean when a tooth is "calcified" or "obstructed"?
Over time, a tooth can respond to stress, trauma, grinding, or other forms of irritation by creating calcified deposits inside its root canals. This process is the body's way of protecting itself and is sometimes referred to as calcification or canal obstruction.
Think of it as the tooth trying to seal itself off from a long-term source of irritation.
One important thing to understand is that a calcified tooth does not automatically mean you need a root canal. Root canal treatment is only necessary when there is infection, disease, or the nerve inside the tooth has become unhealthy or died.
However, if root canal treatment is needed on a calcified tooth, the procedure can be more challenging because the canals become much smaller and harder to locate. Advanced technology, specialized instruments, and modern treatment techniques can help improve the ability to clean and disinfect these difficult areas.
At Prostho Endo Dental Group, technologies like GentleWave® can help clean areas of the root canal system that may be difficult to reach with traditional methods alone.
