When this patient first came to Dr. Carranza, years of grinding and an unstable bite had taken a significant toll on his teeth- affecting both their function and appearance.

Not every worn smile needs the same solution, and that’s why treatment planning matters 🦷💻

One of the biggest misconceptions in full mouth reconstruction is that severe tooth wear automatically means we should “open the bite.” The truth? Every case is different!

For dentists: before treatment begins, start with your patient’s expectations. Do they understand WHY they’re experiencing tooth wear? Are they ready for the journey, both emotionally and financially?

In the first case, our patient had significant wear, missing back teeth, and repeated fractures caused by an unstable bite. But simply opening the vertical dimension wasn’t the answer. Because her teeth had gradually adapted over time, we needed to create restorative space through crown lengthening instead.

Other patients may gain all the space they need by restoring the vertical dimension alone. That’s why a thorough evaluation of esthetics, function, speech, and restorative space is essential before making any treatment decisions.

Transformation 🦋🦷✨

It’s incredible that in 2026 we have the technology to share with patients what the outcome of their dental work will look like, before we actually start working on their case!

Most patients come to us in a vulnerable state, having negative past experiences with dentists, worried about undergoing a full mouth reconstruction (like this one), or not knowing if they’ll feel like themselves once the work is done. Having the ability to share these digital smile designs can be very empowering for the patient + allow them to feel at ease.

NEW SERIES INCOMING 🦷🦋✨

As a prosthodontist, I work in the most complex cases in dentistry. My favorite thing about what I do is solving difficult issues and creating solutions for my patients that not only improve the function of their bite and smile, but leave them with the confidence to live their lives to the fullest.

So in this series I’ll be answering some FAQs and sharing cases along the way! First up— what is the best age for dental implants when it comes to young patients who are missing teeth?

Short answer: it depends!! There are multiple solutions depending on the patient, and I work alongside orthodontists and dental surgeons to create the best outcome.

My passion for dentistry began at age 9 when my brother had a fall, injuring one of his baby teeth— I asked the tooth fairy that year to bring me a microscope! When I left Guatemala to pursue dentistry in the US years later, I could only have dreamed that passion would lead me here someday. 8 years of having my own practice, giving patients their smiles + confidence back when they feel like there’s no hope for them.
